Port calls Diego Suarez Madagascar & Lourenco Marques Mozambique. Rounded the Cape of Good Hope, her first circumnavigation of the globe. Crossed the Atlantic; Visits to Rio de Janeiro & Recife Brazil , St. Thomas, then weapons exercises.
1972: 2/71; arrived Charleston, extended stand down period. 4-6/71; fleet ops, Caribbean training. 6/71; installed LAMPS (light airborne multipurpose system). 7-11/71; initial evaluation of LAMPS helicopter. 12/71-1/72; conversion propulsion plant to burn heavy distillate fuel. 1/72; nine months, testing LAMPS installation, made port visits Atlantic and gulf coast ports, West Indies, participated in 2nd Fleet exercises. 11/72; Charleston, prep for tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea. 12/72; departed to Rota Spain. Visited Barcelona and arriving in Naples Italy, on the 30th.
1973: 1/73; Ionian Sea, ASW exercises. port call, Marseilles. More AAW exercises, port visits to Palma de Mallorca ; Malaga Spain; and Genoa, Italy. 2/73; ops in company with the Italian cruiser VittorioVeneto, National Week XV naval exercise, Central Mediterranean with Greek and Turkish navies participating. 3-6/73; 6th Fleet ASW and AAW exercises, visits to ports mentioned & Athens Greece; Civitavechia and Livorno Italy and Golfe Juan France. 6/73; departed Palma de Mallorca via Strait of Gibraltar to Rota Spain. Transatlantic exercise, sea control ship. 7/73; ventured across the Arctic Circle en-route Charleston. 7/73; arrived Charleston , stand down period, Charleston. 9/73; Charleston Naval Shipyard, regular overhaul.
1974: 6/74; sea trials, post overhaul, rejoined Atlantic Fleet on 20 June, Charleston Naval Station. 7-12/74; refresher training, tests, qualifications, inspections, and evaluations, 2d Fleet operations along the southern Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean.
1975: 1/75; Norfolk Naval Shipyard, sonar dome repairs. 2/75; Charleston, tests and inspections. 3/75; En route to the Mediterranean, joined FORRESTAL (CV-59) and Tunney (SSN-682) in ASW, surface, and air action drills. 3/75; transferred to 6th fleet at Rota Spain, then arrived in Naples Italy, engaged in one training exercise after another, interrupted by frequent port calls, Mediterranean coast of Europe. 6/75; transited the Straits of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles into the Black Sea, and first American ship to visit Rumania at the port city of Constanta -in 49 years. 6/75; brief surveillance of the Soviet helicopter carrier Leningrad. Resumed schedule of training exercises and port visits. On 30 June, Wainwright was re-designated a guided missile cruiser, CG-28.
