On a personal note:
A Seasons Greetings from my family to yours with the solemn hope that each of us that believes will remember what Christmas is for: The Christ-child, Our Saviour and Redeemer.

Give thanks to the Lord for doing what we could not, redeeming us before the Father and making us white as snow. Give thanks for Mighty God and "God with us," whom even after His Ascension into heaven, left us with the Holy Spirit as a deposit for the fulfillment of the promises given to us.

Truly, the gifts we give this season pale in comparison to the gift that He's already given to those who believe. For those who do not know Him, I pray that you come to belief and that you will know His peace.

May The Lord's blessings rain down upon you all.

From the Officers of the Wainwright Veterans Association:

Seasons Greetings and a Happy New Year!!!
May each of us reflect on the time we've spent in foreign ports for the Holidays and give thanks for being with family and for the many blessings that come our way - no matter the form; all the while remembering those who still wear the uniform and are not with their families this season. Just as we have been, so are they now, the Guardians of liberty.

DUTY - HONOR - COUNTRY. The Hallmark of those in uniform, and the things that mark us - those of service past - even today. Remember our fallen comrades and march boldly into what some regard as the New Millenium.

Dear Shipmates,
Just to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Just to let you know a little about i served on the USS Wainwright from
1989 to 1993 Up to the time she was decommissioned. My Commanding Officers
were Capt. Newlon and Capt. Fahey. I would love to share some of my photo's with you all
She was in my eyes one of finest war ships we had.
When i first reported aboard she was well know as Battle Tested and Battle Proven.
Capt. Fahey want us to rename it so we went to Pride Ownership and Responsibilty.
I like the orignal better.

I will speak to you all later. Ned Diggs

I was in the Gyro Shop on the USS Yellowstone (AD-27) from 1971-74 where we were homeported along with the Wainwright in Charleston. We didn't have to do as much reair work on CG-28 as the other ships in CRUDESFLOT-6 probably because the crew did such a fine job of maintaining that marvelous floating beast. Ships sailed in and out of the harbor all the time but the Wainwright seemed to catch everyone's attention coming and going. Next to the pier she stood like a knight ready to ride into battle. Underway she became the embodiment of enormous striking power. This ship could look mean and beautiful at the same time. I'm sure we will tell Wainwright stories at the Yellowstone reunion this March down in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

I reported to Wainwright in September 1965 as part of the pre-comm crew at Bath Iron Works. I remember having good times at The Stowe House in Brunswick and returning to fantastic mid-rats that they had for the pilots at Naval Air Station Brunswick. Jan 8, 1966: A bitter cold day and a long winded Marine speaking from the podium. Running aground in Boston harbor and hitting a whale. Too much "Tiger Milk" in Norfolk and the mysterious sinking of a whaleboat at the Coast Guard Station that supplied transportation to the accidentally damaged deperm dock where the ship was located... Could probably go on for hours...

One of my most treasured possessions are the slides and photographs of that first crossing of the equator (Oh the horror of kissing that baby).. I'll most likely prepare a collage for viewing at the Reunion in 2000.

Would love to hear from just about anybody from these old days (left our WainyBaby in May 68).. Does anyone know what happened to Charles Johnson ETN-2 ???

I BOARDED THE WAINWRIGHT IN '67 AT SUBIC BAY PI.I WAS PART OF A CT DETACHMENT GOING TO VIETNAM AS PART OF THE NAVAL SECURITY GROUP. OUR JOB THERE WAS TO STAY IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH ALL THE OTHER SHIPS IN THE GULF AND TO MONITOR ALL RADIO TRAFFIC COMING OUT OF VIETNAM.ALL OF OUR WORK WAS HIGHLY CLASSIFIED. BEING A MEMBER OF THE CREW OF THE USS WAINWRIGHT AND GOING TO VIET NAM WAS AN HONOR FOR ME.I JUST DID NOT KNOW IT AT THE TIME.I HOPE SHE CAN BE SAVED FROM BEING SCRAPPED. ITS NOT A FITTING END FOR A DECORATED

Ships company May 1980-Dec 1981, Med, North Atlantic plus other short cruises. Put on the hat Sept 81, transferd to Bowen (FF-1079) shorthly there after. Retired form COMCRUDESGRU TWO Staff in Jan 90. Still stumble across old shipmates in Charleston (when I'm in town). Would love to hear from all my old shipmates esp OE div, the lifer locker(1st class mess) and Chief's quarters (aka.the Goatlocker). I have the 3 Feb-16 July Med Cruisebook, but it doesn't list any of our port visits or details of dealing with the Lybian Coast, or all the time sitting "on station", the CNO visit or much other details. Comcrudesgru-2 was embarked and for much of that period, Wainwright was the only Cruiser deployed in 6th fleet. Has some great pictures. So if this brings back memories. shoot me some e-mail. Will try for the reunion in 2000, hope to sea everyone there.

Came upon your site while browsing the name Wainwright. I've been reading the messages and got quite emotional, sounds like only the elite were picked to serve on Wainwright. I can't beleive that my surname is known by so many people and held in such high esteem. God bless all of you who served on her.

I am a Plank Owner, I went through the training at Newport Rhode Island before going aboard just like all of the Plank Owner's. When I first went aboard I was asigned as a boatswain mate for about six months than I was Lt Commander West's Yeoman for abount 1 year and than I was in the Ship's Office as a Yeoman until I was discharged on June 1, 1968. I was looking for a copy of the First Viet Nam cruise book. I was also looking for information of Robert Peterson from Ventura California, Larry Gene Frammartino from Pennsylvania, Douglas Tart from Dunn North Carolina. I hope all of you had a great Veterans Day, even though most of us probably had to work. (Smooth Sailing) from an old shipmate. 11/11/1999.

Greetings to all Wainwright Vets and their families,
Tomorrow is Veteran's Day, a day of rememberance, of thanks, and sorrow for all of us.
Remembering the people we've known and served with over the years, whether we've stayed in touch with them or not. Many times, a picture or a comment will bring a face to your mind and we'll remember the person and their impact on us. We'll remember the good times more often than the bad, but we will remember, the memories never go away, they are just filed somewhere in our minds. And when some of us get together and start talking, the memories come out of hiding, and for a while, all the people we talk about are alive, living in our memories and thoughts.
When I look around me at my family, I give silent thanks that they are well, and living in this country I served to protect, enjoying so much that they really can't understand for now. I offer special thanks to all the people I served with, for their wisdom and encouragement, and criticism as well, for I needed it at times. And I give special thanks to whatever gods have protected us, for allowing me to return and enjoy these things we hold dear.
The sorrow that I feel is the sorrow of losing someone who was a good friend. An integral part of you whether you knew them or not, because we were all brothers and sisters in one large family. Losing one or many hurts, and it never completely goes away. For many of us, a trip to Washington and visiting the Vietnam Veterans Wall, the statue commemorating the service of our nurses, and the Korean memorial bring this home and make our memories all the more poignant.
In closing, let me wish all of you well, and when you meet one of us, no matter from what conflict, shake each other's hand, and say "Welcome Home".

Sincerely,
Frank J. Yost, President
Wainwright Veterans Association

I reported aboard in 1965 while the Wainwright was still at the Bath shipyard. I was an SK-2 in the Supply Division and served as Commissary Storekeeper until I got orders to the NATO base in Naples, Italy in 1967 - just before the ship went on its first Viet Nam cruise. I happened on the site while searching the web for some of my old shipmates. I'm looking in particular for SK-2 Nick Giordano who was onboard during the same period.
Thanks to all who contributed to the DLGCG28 website.

I am looking for a cruisebook from the 1984-1985 deployment. If anyone has an extra, or one that they are willing to part with, I will gladly pay whatever you think it is worth. I lost mine in one of many moves....it's the only one missing from the 5 ships I was on. Still looking for GMG3 Bob Shifflet and FC2 Paul Brown, and would love to hear from any shipmates onboard from 1984-86. I was a PN2 at the time. Read my decklog entry from earlier this year.

Just for Clarification on the previous entry.
The Wainwright traveled into the Black Sea during the spring/summer of 1975, on a visit to Constanta, Romania. We spent several days there and it turned out to be a very interesting visit.
In 1971 we visited Ethiopia for a few days. Captain Vining brought Emperor Haile Selassie on board and some of us got to meet/shake hands/speak with him for a few minutes. That was shortly after the infamous Z-grams, one of them allowing us to grow beards, of which the Emperor was quite fond of.
Gregory Bledsoe was on that WestPac cruise also, then left the ship for shore duty, and I believe came back aboard a few years later. Someone mentioned him a few entries back.

Ahoy Mates,
RMSM Jerry Housh 76/78. I was stationed aboard the old gal for only a short period of time, but I still have dreams of walking back across her decks. I was a messed up BOY back then, only 18 and fresh from San Diego "A" school. I reported onboard in Naples, Italy on 14 April 1977. WHAT A CRUISE! I was hooked. Any shipmates on the '77 Med cruise remember pulling into Antalia, Turkey only to find "YANKEE GO HOME" banners and OZO! First ship to enter the Black Sea in 20 or 30 years and almost being rammed by the Russian ship. MOST IMPORTANTLY, DOES ANYONE REMEMBER "BO AND TIC"?!? Where are they? I have always said that the most peacefull and relaxing feeling that I have ever felt was laying on the helo pad in the middle of the Med somewhere at midnight just looking up at the millions of stars and realizing just how small we were. And at the same time listening to a cassette I had recorded of "BO & Tic" doing "Long Haired Country Boy"
Not long after that cruise was when "she" went into the shipyards be cut in half ?(through the radioshack), and while most ladies tried to lose a little around the "Mid-Section" they slapped an extra 40 feet into "HERS"!
Another noteable event that cruise was the death of Elvis Presely. The message came into the Shack as a "**FLASH**" message, which meant that it had to be walked through to the Captain, Captain Berry I believe, then he made the announcement over the ship's intercom. Does anyone know what happened to RM1 Murphy, A first class Cook I believe named Collie, The Postmaster named Jerry (I think) I am terribly embarrased by the fact that my memory is not what it used to be and I remember very few NAMES, But I do remember the faces of the men I served with. If anyone remembers me or would just like to "talk" about the 77 pleasure cruise, drop me a line. OH YEAH, I got into civi trouble while onboard and that was the DEATH OF MY NAVAL CARREER! They would have had to physically drag me of the old GAL if that had not happened. it was the worst day of my life when I walked away from that ship knowing that my dreams of being a carreer sailor were gone and dead. I still miss the dream today and I am extremely sorry and outraged at the demise of the "President's Show Boat" Remember 1976, Operation Sail. The President of the United States sailed into the Harbor in the parade of tall ships celebrating the Bicentennial. She is so full of history and in a world where everyone seems to be losing their sense of heritage and pride in being an American we need as many reminders of the cost of our freedom and what it took to secure it.
I hope that I am able to, at least in a small way, help in preserving the memory of the old gal and also help to ensure that her ships bell does not ring one final time anytime soon.

Thanks for the Website guys, IT'S GREAT, and for giving me a place to jot down some of my memories while I still have memories!!!

Does anyone remember Jeffrey "P-NUT" Carter, Postal clerk/Boatsmans mate. He is still in Moncks Corner, SC. Married to my Ex-wifes Aunt. Fresh Ex, divorced last week after 15 years married. Just like on that deck 22 years ago and as the old song said, "Alone Again, naturaly"

PS: the reason I was doing a search for the Wainwright was because I have a belt buckle from 1977 as well as the 77 cruise photo with the track chart of the 77 cruise, that I am going to part with on the EBAY auction site. I hate to part with these things after so many years, however, my EX destroyed me financially as well as emotionally, and I am about to lose my car and home. In response to ROBIN ADAMS request for info about the 2 F-4's, here is what I can remember.
I was a newly arrived OS (onboard for only 2 weeks) and was
stationed as a loader on the port side CWIS. From what I
was told by CIC watchstanders later, 2 F-4s approached us.
As soon as they went feet wet, we locked up on them with
Fire Control. They both turned back. Then one turned and
came back. We fired one SM-1, he dove, it missed. He
continued on. We fired a second SM-1, the rest is history.
Exact ranges, I can't remember, but it seems to me that
they were about 40 miles out when we locked up on them.
But I don't think we were that far off the coast. If
anyone can confirm or deny or append this recollection,
please do.

Sorry I didn't give all of my e-mail information, if anyone
wants to contact me. Any shipmates remember when we went out
to sea during Hurricane David, man that was a ride. I think
there were only about 3 of us in the radioshack who weren't
sick. YOu could go up to the bridge and either see nothing
but a wall of water or nothing but sky. Rember when the
screws woould come out of the water and the ship would shake. That was something. I really enjoy the site. Bobby
it was great hearing from you.

Just a few lines to let all know that "FLOYD" turned away and spared Fla, here on the west coast, some wind and rain, not too bad at all. I guess the worst part was along the east coast, hope all in the Daytona & Jax area made it thru all right. For those of us in the SC and NC area, take care, keep in touch and let us know if any help is needed. Best wishes to all.

THIS IS PACKAGED IN A SMALL/JUST RIGHT BAGGIE, ON A WHITE CARD, WITH BLUE LETTERING. IT SAYS "VANGUARD NOVELTY

Serving on Board the Wainwright was the best!! i can still remember when MM3 Davenport, BT3 Palffy, SMSN Tallman and myself got busted by our Chief for playing music in the Forward Shaft alley (not Radio music) we had Electonic Drums,Electric Guitars and bass guitars and an amp and mic for vocals and it was i think about 11pm while we were underway. Yeah we were a wild bunch! had a warehouse off base and we would play there every night. was in a local magazine and even played two bars while we were in Virginia during our Overhaul.. Man those were the days..

Can anyone remember where you were, or what you were doing at
0700 April 18, 1988? If you were onboard WWT, you can.

This is when we heard the words "THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THIS IS
NOT A DRILL. GENERAL QUARTERS! GENERAL QUARTERS! ALL HANDS
MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS!!!"

This was for the retaliatory strike on the Sirri,GOSP.( GAS
OIL SEPARATION PLANT ), for the mine damage to the USS Samuel
B. Roberts in the "ARABIAN GULF".

I will not go into the details, but I remember most of them.
Even though I was scared most of the day. I just knew I would
not get back home. But God was pushing all the right buttons
for the guys in CIC.

But the HOMECOMING almost made you forget that day. I said
ALMOST.

HOWDY . . .
FOR MY SERVICE IN THE VIETNAM WAR I HAVE RECEIVED LITTLE ENOUGH
RECOGNITION. I HAVE BEEN LONG TIME STEAMED THAT WHEN THE SEA SERVICE
DEPLOYMENT RIBBON WAS ESTABLISHED THE AWARD DID NOT REACH BACK
RETROACTIVE TO INCLUDE THIS AWARD FOR ALL SAILORS SERVICE COMMITMENTS TO
DUTY IN THE FLEET. I AM OF THE OPINION THAT THE VIETNAM VETERANS WHERE
GIVEN SHORT SHRIFT, AGAIN, BY THIS FAILURE TO RECOGNIZE OUR SERVICE.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS, I WANT TO WEAR THAT WHICH I AND ALL
OTHERS SERVED FOR. I WANT YOUR OPINIONS AND PROMOTION OF THIS QUESTION,
TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE NAM VETS GET INCLUDED IN THIS.

Wow. It's amazing how much I remember about that ship, even though I tried my damndest to forget about it! I served aboard Wainwright Dec. 78 to Jan. 81, most of it in X Division. I ran TORO-TV, did a daily newspaper underway and wrote the familygram. I remember:

- Pulling out of the Charleston shipyards in Spring 79 and running aground near Ft. Sumter.
- Capt. McCoy staggering down the middle of the main street on liberty in Ft. Lauderdale.
- Getting diverted on our way to GTMO in 79 for ops off the coast of Nicaragua during the revolution. We patrolled unsupported for a month, then had to go to GTMO when we were finished. To top it off, we returned to Charleston, then left two days later to ride out Hurricane David.
-Med Cruise '79-80 with Forrestal. We sailed shorthanded and X Div had to help the OSs man the radars. Three extended port visits to Naples, getting asked to leave Kalamata, Greece by the local government, Black Sea ops, the rumor mill that had us getting extended and going to the Persian Gulf for the hostage crisis, and great liberty in Villefranche, Barcelona and Sicily.
-The North Atlantic/Baltic Ocean deployment in '80, with port visits to Amsterdam (in the pre-urinalysis days!), Helsinki (where a bunch of us got tanked on vodka and tried to take a train to Russia), Stockholm and Portsmouth (singing "Battle of New Orleans" in pub just outside the Navy base).

Most of all I remember some great people ... Wesley Fereday, Mike Lillard, Al Tiedt, Mike Smith, QM1 Bledsoe. I remember some wierd people ... Bill Karpenko, a QM I only recall as "Digger," and PNCS Greenwood, who reviewed the crew's movies solely on their T&A value. I also remember som not so very good people ... but besides George Hargrove, most of their names escape me.

Looking back, being on the Wainwright was one of the better times I ever hated.

Did'nt spend a great ammount of time on the Waiwright, nor the Navy,as I was a very mixed up
individual(with the emphasis on individual).
Not one thing in my life is a greater embarassment to me than the disgrace I brought upon myself when I went UA.I let my shipmates down, and for that I can never apologize enough.I was young, ignorant, and extremely naive. Greetings to all Wainwright Vets:
I'm sending this to update you on two changes that have taken place in the association officers.
Ed Osborne and I have shifted duties and resposibilties as president and 3rd VP; this was done at Ed's request as he has suffered the fate of many of us,downsizing. He is still interested and involved in the organization, but also deeply involved in getting re-established in a professional situation.
The second item cocerns the second VP position. As most of us know, Stan Smith has been a dedicated member of our organization, both as 2nd VP and also as the keeper of our ship's store. Stan is the same type of re-organizing as Ed,consequently, he feels he cannot devote the time necessary and asked that we find a replacement for him. At the meeting in Cincinatti, we asked Chris Little if he would fill in for Stan, and he accepted.
To both Ed and Stan, my deepest thanks for the efforts both of you have put into this organization, my best wishes for your success and we'll do our best to keep things running smoothly.
Sincerely,
Frank Yost, President, Wainwright Veteran's Association

Greetings to all Wainwright vets; those of us that are older and those not-quite-so-old. Recently returned from an exec committee meeting in Cincinatti, one of the main topics was the reunion for 2000 in Charleston. With the help of our shipmates locally we should be in for another good one. It was a treat meeting with some of the members that came from later on in the life of the Wainwright, and finding that they had the same desire to keep in touch as we did. Once the initial awkwardness was taken care of, the meeting progressed rapidly, covering a lot of items that you will read about in upcoming newsletters and entries in the ship's log.
Thanks to Bob McCray for being an excellent guide, he showed us around for food and entertainment and managed not to get lost too badly in the maze of streets up there. Also thanks to those who showed up; JC Carlson, Chris Little, Don Raby, Dave Dobson, Dave Morris, and Gene Williams. Along with this goes a special thank you to the ladies for patiently listening to the stories and waiting for us while we held our meeting; Ma McCray, Judy Dobson, Colleen Morris, Donna Little and Lougenia Williams. Ladies, it was a pleasure having you at the meeting for the weekend, we really enjoyed your company. I'll say goodby for now and hope to see you next year....Frank

ATTN: All Wainwright Vets
SUBJECT: Survey
At the EXEC meeting in Erlanger, JC and I discussed reasons why a vet decides to seek out information about their previous posts, ships, units. In an attempt to further nail down the "whys?" behind this, I'd like everyone to take a couple of minutes to look over the following questions and then send an e-mail to me with your answers.

The questions are: 1)How long have you been out and/or completed service aboard the Wainwright? 2)How long (after discharge/completion of service) was it before you had an interest in joining in Veterans activities such as this association? 3)What other Veteran's group do you belong to (if any)? 4)Why did you wish to be a part of these groups? 5)What was your final rate/rank upon leaving Wainwright? 6)What was your BEST experience while aboard the Wainwright? 7)What was you WORST?

I will end up using this information in the abstract (without using names, etc) to see if I can peg down common points between us. Also, if anyone has any information relating to the custom of throwing a white hat as the ship went beneath the Cooper River bridge - I'd appreciate that as well.

Thanks for your time. Chris Little, OS2, 1990-93 Chris_Little@jahoopa.com

I was a DS3, promoted to (and departed as) a DS2 in the NTDS shop (OE02).

Nice to finally find a website on the old girl. However, it looks like I need to digitize some of my Persian Gulf/Operation Praying Mantis pics and send them in.

Wouldn't mind hearing from my old shipmates from those days.
Of course, 10 years away from the boat does make it somewhat nostalgic. Nothing like the way we felt while actually serving on her during those days.

Hello to all,
I arrived home safely Sunday Afternoon after a great weekend. I was very pleased to see all those faces

It was a most pleasant and memorable time. I appreciate seeing all the photos and memorabilia from Wainwright. Thanks to all for making a warm welcome to a great family of Wainwrighters.

Thanks to the ladies, Mama McCray, Judy Dobson, Colleen Morris, Lougenia Williams, and Donna Little for your support, encouragement and patience during our FIVE hour meeting. We had great fun eating out and at the Aquarium!!

Thanks to Bob McCray for hosting and the extended tours of three states.

I think we accomplished a lot of planning and plenty of work for next year as we prepare for reunion, and
work to get museum in Charleston at the Naval Base.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in July 2000!!! Don Raby

HOWDY ALL . . .

I ARRIVED OK AT HOME LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. I WAS SORT OF NUMB FROM THE BUSY
WEEKEND, SO I AM MOVING SLOWLY TODAY WORKING ONLY ON THE MOST IMPORTANT.

THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING WENT VERY WELL, I THINK. I WANT TO THANK ALL OF
THE SHIPMATES AND FAIR LADIES FOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO THIS DUTY WEEKEND.

THE MEETING LASTED ABOUT 4 HOURS WITH MANY SUBJECTS DISCUSSED. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH
THIS 3 YEAR SPAN BETWEEN REUNIONS WAS A DISRUPTION IN OUR PLANNING AND OPERATING
STRIDE. AT THE NEXT REUNION I FEEL THE BY LAWS SHOULD BE CHANGED TO LOCK IN THE 2
YEAR CYCLE.

WE HAD FIRST TIMERS TO THIS MEETING BEING DON RABY AND CHRIS LITTLE. WE WERE
PLEASED TO HEAR THEIR SEA STORIES AND HISTORY. THESE FINE MEN ARE COMMITTING TO
HELPING THE ASSOCIATION CONTINUE ON COURSE. THANKS MATES. I WAS MIGHTILY SURPRISED
TO FIND THAT CHRIS WAS BORN SIX MONTHS AFTER NANCY AND I RETURNED HOME FROM OUR
NAVY DAYS. AM I GETTING THAT OLD ?

AGAIN, THANKS FOR STANDING THE HELM WATCHES THAT YOU DO. STEADY ON COURSE.

Greetings all! I served onboard CG28 from 1979-1982, serving as the Senior Track Sup in CIC the final year. Made 2 Med Cruises, 1 North Atlantic, Libya Encounter, Nicaragua Revolution, Sail boat Rescue in the Atlantic and a member of the infamous Panama 12 (or was it 15?). My kids now enjoy the old Cracker Jack uniform that was brought back while I was enlisted.

Wainwright Shipmates!!!
I do not want to be a pest but I am taking this liberty to write to all
names who signed
decklog on web site.. Ken Z has done an outstanding service in
providing this great
tool for us to connect. The crews of Wainwright stretch from 1965 -1993
and we have a great
group. The current projects in which we need all hands effort is the
petitioning by mail the
Sec Nav and your state Senators and Representatives asking for a new
ship named Wainwright.
This will help preserve the memories and history of the World Class
Cruiser we all loved.

If you have not written yet check the sample letters and write a short
note to express your support
for this project... DO THIS NOW...

Secondly we need to contact all shipmates who have settled in the LOW
Country area around
Charleston to establish a chapter of Wainwright Veterans there for the
purpose of establishing a
museum in Charleston or North Charleston.. If you know anyone who was
on Wainwright from this
area send their address to me for contact. Email, and Home address
with phone numbers are needed
to get this moving.... This is a national effort supporting the local
development for our memorial..

As I read the deck log You have expressed a desire to help, now is the
opportunity...
We have many shipmates who need to be contacted about these matters who
are not on internet.

Your assistance is greatly Appreciated... Don Raby SOS Committee...

Here are more address to write for new ship named Wainwright. More letters the better....
CNO
Admiral Jay L. Johnson, USN
Chief of Naval Operations, OPNAV
2000 Navy Pentagon
Washington, DC 20350-2000

N-86 - Director, Surface Warfare Division
Radm. Michael G. Mullen, USN
Director, Surface Warfare Division, N86 OPNAV
2000 Navy Pentagon
Washington, DC 20350-2000

I would also write:
Vadm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, USN
Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for
Resources, Warfare Requirements and Assessments, N8 OPNAV
2000 Navy Pentagon
Washington, DC 20350-2000

Radm. William W. Cobb Jr., USN
Program Executive Officer
Theater Surface Combatants
2531 Jefferson Davis Highway NC-2 Room 10N16
Arlington, VA 22242-5165

Vadm Lautenbacher is a senior Surface Warfare officer and the N8 shop is
where all the resources come together. Radm Cobb is the Surface Warfare
officer - in acquisition that relieved me - He builds the ships and can
recommend to CNO/SECNAV names for consideration. The Naval historian is the
one that does the research - the fact that there have been ships named
Wainwright before makes it easier - the competition is to also feed in the
more modern day heroes as well while keeping our heritage. I think we have a
shot - the Wainwright Association will have to keep the letters coming in.

Just a brief note to encourage letter writing requesting a new ship named WAINWRIGHT. By this we can preserve
the memory and tradition that made CG 28 the Best Ship of the entire Fleet. I believe this more as I meet more of you.
It was head up above what I saw on other vessels..

CG-28 rules! That's right...even though she's no longer haze gray and underway, she's still the best all-around combatant our Navy will ever know, in my not-so-humble opinion. I cross-decked to WWT in March of '88 from USS MacDonough (DDG-39), also from CHASN. I'm in contact with Mac vets as well, and it's good to see her crew hasn't forgotten her either. One of the many rates that I struck from Deck was Gunner's Mate (Missiles), but they took me, and I put on GMM3 and ESWS before I left WWT in July of '90. That's when I moved to the Weekend Warrior side of the house. I'm still there, as a First Class Petty Officer, finishing conversion to Intelligence Specialist (IS). Mentioning me and Intel in the same sentence should cause chuckles to all that remember me. A little background is necessary. I was the tall geek with the wild blond hair who could give tours in every country that we hit on my own time, but couldn't stay awake on-duty. I grew up on CG-28, and if only for my own selfish reasons, it would be great to keep her around in one piece, with respect. Fortunately, it's not just me that feels that way. We need to get behind Don Raby and the others who are expending so much effort in this cause. I look forward to seeing you guys next reunion (July 2000?), but more so, to Saving Our Ship. -For Christ, kin, and country..."Seck"

Served onboard Wainwright as a PN2 from June 1984 to October 1985, I made PN1 and went to USS Nicholas. PNC Jeff Pugh and PN3 Bobby Joe Hunter were in the office also. I made a lot of great friends on that ship. If anyone knows the whereabouts of FC2 Paul Brown, GMG3 Bob Shifflet, or any of the TM's, GMG's or GMM's that served during that time, please let me know. We need to get the word out about the reunion next year, and get as many shipmates there as possible.
I was onboard Wainwright during the Med cruise of 1984-1985 when we went to the Black Sea, to document the Incidents at Sea (the Russians provoking and/or bumping into American ships). I was one of the lucky ones who got to video tape the incidents. It was COLD in the Black Sea during the winter. I think the Russian leader died during that time, and they called the whole thing off.
I'm glad I accidentally ran across the Wainwright homepage. Last I heard (when I was on USS Seattle in the yards in Phila) was that they had scrapped her, and were going to dismantle her. I'm very glad she is still afloat, and I think we should make an organized effort to get her to a maritime museum somewhere.
Any shipmates from my era, feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail. I would love to talk about old times. We worked hard on that ship, and definitely partied hard. Remember the Number One Piano Bar in Naples? Cold beer and loud rock & roll. What a place. Keep in touch guys!

Greetings to the veterans of the USS Wainwright. I am Anne Bodman, granddaughter and great granddaughter of two of the Wainwrights the ship was named for--thank you Don Raby for finding me! My grandmother Mrs. Richard Wainwright, sponsored the ship in Bath, Maine in 1965, and my mother, Frances Wainwright Bodman, was one of the Commissioners in Boston in 1966. My brother Richard (named after quess who) and I were also there and are very proud to be part of a Navy family. All of us would like to assist in any way we can in saving the Wainwright. This web site has been an enormous new interest for my mother, who is now in her 80's. From the beginning she always wanted to be kept up to date on the activities of the ship, and she corresponded with several of the first Captains. Now I'm downloading pape after page and mailing it to her--covering her living room with tales and pictures of the Wainwright. I hope we can save her.

Served from JUL90 through OCT93 as a DS3/DS2. During that time Wainwright went to Metro Machine in Norfolk for an 18 month overhaul then down to Gitmo for refreasher training.
We spent various "two weekers" off Vacapes to test the New Threat Upgrade that we received in the yards. Then it was back to Charleston to kiss the wife goodby for the 92-93 Med cruise. I left the Wainwright just before decom to go to Dam Neck VA,where I made DS1. I left the Navy after eight years with Diabetes. I guess what I am trying to say is that the Wainwright was a big part of our lives and She needs to be preserved. Save Our Ship ! On January 8 (Friday)1999, my daughter will present the framed print (picture) of the Wainwright, which she won at the Washington Reunion, to VFW Post 9488 in Charlotte, NC.
Duane and Dave Britton gave the large print of the Wainwright as a door prize during the reunion, and Erika was luck to have the winning ticket. Recently she decided to frame the print and make the presentation for display in our VFW post. Goes to show our kids love the Wainwright too!

Greetings, my name is Lloyd Rosecrans. I served aboard the
> Wainwright as DS1 from 82-85. I was aboard when we were called out of
> Gitmo to go and pick up bodies from the CC. It seems that the CC pulled
> along side the small sailboat/raft to offer assistance and when the
> doctor and a couple of hands went aboard the Haitians all moved away
> from them which caused the raft to capsize. The doctor and one of the
> hands were drowned along with 9?? Haitians. We took the bodies of the
> Haitians aboard, put them in the refer and sailed to Port a Prince. BM1
> Tim Strickland piloted the motor whale boat to the piers and unloaded
> the bodies. He said that CBS and NBC were waiting with cameras when they
> arrived. As he approached the piers he ran aground and managed to wrap
> wire cable, plastic bags and other assorted crap around the prop shaft.
> He was then forced to back up the whole way to the piers and back out to
> the ship. After they lifted the motor whale boat back into her davits,
> He proceeded to pull all of the stuff away from the shaft. What He
> forgot was how sharp and rusty all the cable was and he proceeded to cut
> up his hands. Poor Tim had to get a whole series of shots due to the
> badly polluted waters in the area.
> Thanks for the great web site, sure brings back memories. I
> recently took a tour of the USS Turner Joy. Just walking inside the
> first hatch brought a flood of memories back. The smells and all of the
> old gear!! Boy oh boy!!! I spent six years at sea duty, served on the

> finished with the Wainwright.
