Learned from MMCM Bradway (Ret) that ETCS George Zinser died in 1995
while aboard a carrier attending fleet week in NY. George had gone on and
received his commission and was serving on a staff. I will always remember
George for his positive, can-do attitude and generosity in providing help
to others when he felt that they needed it.

YOKOSUKA TO TONKIN GULF :
Typhoon Patsy and Sea Legs
I flew to Yokosuka to board DLG 28 embarked for Gulf of Tonkin.
Being inexperienced at sea they saw fit to send me to mess duty. On the
second
day out we passed near Typhoon Patsy in Taiwan Straits. While
banging trays
in scullery I became well acquainted with EGOR the garbage grinder.
Rocking and rolling did not agree with me and finally the merciful Chief
sent me to the rack to recover. I thought the ship was going to break up,
popping, and creaking.
On November 20,1970 we entered Tonkin Gulf joining Task Force 77:
Oriskany,
Ranger, Hancock, Kitty Hawk??, Chicago CG11, Jouett DLG 29,
Destroyers: Stoddert DDG 22, Lloyd Thomas DD 764, Perkins DD 877
Agerholm DD 826 perhaps others.
The most fearful surprise came at 2100 when the XO announced on 1MC
that General Quarters would be at 0200. GQ IN A COMBAT
ZONE!?!?
THIS IS NOT A DRILL!! Fear struck in my heart. Only 19 years
old and I do not like war. I tossed and turned until 0100 then when the
alarm sounded I did
not hear it. Awakened and disoriented I was alone in the berthing
compartment.
Quickly dressing I had to climb through scuttles in condition ZEBRA.
I arrived
on the Three Inch Gun not apparently too late. WHAT AM I DOING
HERE???
As it was we were assigned to lookout for contacts. We were not told
what the operation was but scuttle-butt suggested diversionary support. To
my novice
relief no action occurred. It was support for the SON TAY Raid to
recover
POWs 23 miles west of Hanoi. The Navy flyers dropped flare bombs
on
Haiphong Harbor. Wainwright tracked aircraft with her Big Eyes
radar.
The raiders did not find prisoners, but did result in better
treatment after the
captors were aware of our capabilities. The next 33 days saw no
sunshine,
plenty of unrep and long hours working as we operated PIRAZ with
TF-77.
Not too bad after I got my sea legs and learned my way to GQ.

SO WE LEFT CHARLESTON IN MAY OF '67 BOUND FOR WESTPAC. THE USS
WAINWRIGHT WAS OFF ON HER MAIDEN DEPLOYMENT, COMBAT DUTY WITH TASK FORCE
77, AT PIRAZ; "RED
CROWN". CAPTAIN LOCKEE TOOK US TO THE CANAL ZONE PANAMA, SAN
DIEGO, PEARL, GUAM AND SUBIC. SO WE PULL INTO SUBIC UNDER CLOUDS, UNABLE
TO TAKE OUR POSITION
ON THE WALL. WE WERE HUNG UP WAITING IN THE FLEET ANCHORAGE, WITH
LTTLE WAY ON, WAITING AND WAITING. THEN CAPTAIN LOCKEE ORDER "DROP
ANCHOR." JUST THEN
IT STARTED TO RAIN. IT RAN SO HARD THAT THE WELTING IN MY LOW CUTS
SWOLL UP AND LET GO. THE OTHERS ABANDONED THEIR SHOES INTO THE LIGHT
LOCKER ALONG
WITH THE SMOKES, AND ALL OTHER WATER DAMAGEABLE MATERIALS. IT RAINED
SO THAT THERE WAS 2 INCHES OF WATER ON THE FANTAIL AT THE CROWN IN THE
DECK. ALL THIS
TIME THERE IS NO ORDER TO SET THE ANCHOR DETAIL AND CUT THE WATER
DOGS ON SEA DETAIL A STAND DOWN. NO, WE STOOD THERE IN THE RAIN, DIXIE
CUPS PULLED DOWN
TO KEEP THE FLOOD OUT OF OUR EARS. AND IT RAINED. THERE WAS A
BROADWAY OF WATER IN THE PASSAGEWAYS LEADING TO THE MESS DECKS, WHICH WAS
SERVING COFFEE.
SO LATER WE FINALLY UP ANCHOR AND GO TO THE WALL WHEN THE RAIN CUT
OFF. LATER WHEN THE STERN TUG CAPTAIN [1ST CLASS] WAS NEAR DONE PUTTING US
UP HE ADVISED
THAT IT HAD RAINED 17.5 INCHES THAT DAY, AND HE FIGURED WE STOOK OUT
IN 15 INCHES OF THAT RAIN. AT THE FIRST REUNION IN '89 I TALKED TO CAPTAIN
LOCKEE
ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AND MY SHOES. HE LAUGHED HEARTILY ALL THE TIME HE
WAS SAYING "I DID THAT ?"

Wainwright is a great memory. Thanks for preserving them.
The following story goes with my Photos posted on this site. Great
Job Ken!!
FOULED ANCHOR IN MASSAWA
The crew wanted to go to Australia. The Navy sent Wainwright to
Ethiopia.
After two line periods in Tonkin Gulf and brief stops in Subic Bay,
Hong Kong
Singapore we were off across the Indian Ocean. We spent ten days
cleaning and painting the Wainwright in preparation for an international
showing at Ethiopian Navy days. Warships from France, Great Britain,
India, Iran, Italy
and Soviet Union were tied pierside. Basically a cruiser the
designated destroyer leader DLG 28 was too large and anchored out from
Massawa February 19,1971.
Three days of review by visiting dignitaries and top brass concluded
with an afternoon Red Sea cruise for Emperor Haile Selassi I . The short
Rastafari
enjoyed his visit and we were ready for holiday routine as we were
to get
underway toward home.
Set the sea and anchor detail!! Up the anchor.
Something is wrong,
the anchor will not come aboard. Right at the waters surface two
anchors are
locked together. One, ancient, rusty and covered with barnacles
chained to
the past. The other modern and painted haze gray ready for duty. Release
the anchor Both fall inseparably linked. Raised again dropped
again, no release.
First Division Chief Boyd and Boatswainsmate Diamond Jim
Brady study the
problem. Their solution: tie a 3 nylon line on the ancient
anchor then lower the
modern to separate. Seaman Gary Perkins is lowered over side to
secure the
line. All hands stand clear focastle! One snap of
a flailing line could sever a limb.
Safety first. Even the safest conditions are full of danger aboard
warship. Especially in this tense circumstance, a mighty warrior detained
by a fouled anchor! A stretched nylon line taut as steel cable.
Will it work? How do we remove the line? Diamond Jim
wields an axe.
CHOP! not yet, CHOP,SNAP!! three fathoms of nylon whipping through
the bullnose. Wainwright is free to show power for peace again. But, I
have
always wondered what was on the other end of that rusty chain sunken
below the depths.

Hi, all. I was part of the USS Wainwright's history from December 1,
1972 through approximately June 30, 1973. I was part of the helo
detachment. I was an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Technician, Third
Class (AX-3). I have been following the Wainwright ever since becoming
aware of this site as well as through the Association's newsletter. I have
a request from any ship's company during the timeframe I was on board. Do
any of you have any photographs, slides or other visual records of any of
the flight operations tghat took place? I am trying to get as many
pictures as possible for both myself and a friend who is engaged in
research on the SH-2 Kaman Seasprite helicopter for a book he is working
on. If you do have any pictures and would be willing to share them with
me, I will be sure you get full credit for them if they are used. Even if
the aren't used, they will find their way into my extensive Military
Aircraft Image Collection and you will get the same credit due you. Please
e-mail me at gwv@mindspring.com or Gary.Vanderbur@wg.com and we can make

I made 1 WestPac and 2 Med Cruises during that time. About 1993 or so I
got to go back aboard the Wain- wright while it was in Staten Island, NY.,
and toured CIC and spaces (computer control) where I spent my 5+ years
aboard. I have since run into Ralph Linke (ETR1), William "W.D."
Handle (ETR2), and George "Greek" Scaroulis (ET), all of whom
were on board during the same time frame. It's still a beautiful ship.

Very Happy to see my BOAT again. I'm a plank owner and the best
cook that ever served aboard The Wainwright. Breaks my heart to learn that
she is no longer a commissioned ship. Some of my best memories of my youth
are of the times spent onboard The Wainwright Hope to hear from someone
soon. G

Glad to finally find some information on the Wainwright. I served on
Precom detail Sept 1965 in Newport and commissioning in Jan 1966 and
served through April 1967 and left the Wainwright just before her first
world cruise. I have many great memories of our experiences aboard the
Wainwright.I was sad to read that she was decommissioned in 1993. She was
the only ship I served on but as far as I'm concerned, the best! I would
be happy to hear from any shipmates. Beswishes to all my former shipmates.

Hi, all. I served on the Wainwright as an Airdale assigned to HC-4
(became HSL-30 while we were in the Med) from December 1, 1972 through
July 15ish, 1973. I was an AX3 (Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare
Technician). We had a Kaman SH-2D Helicopter on board as part of the LAMPS
program. Our commander was LCDR Kingston. We deployed with 4 officers and
13 enlisted men. While on the cruise, we lost AE2 Bob Rarick overboard
while on night ops around Greece. We all miss Bob. I'd love to hear from
any shipmates that would have been on board the same time I was. Even
though I'm an Airdale and not a Blackshoe, I enjoyed my time aboard the
Wainwright and often think of it very fondly. Happy Sailing, all!
