Great to see the deck log back!!!!! We are putting together a quarter deck from the achives to bring to the reunion in July. If anyone has any items that had been appropiated from the ship's quarter deck and would like to donate them please let me know. We would like to thank Stan Smith for getting, storing, and dontating the quartdeck podium from the ship's decommissing. We are missing quite a few brass items from the quarter deck so check your gear locker. I also want to thank JC, and Dan Bowman for arranging the transport of the podium, and other items JC donated. On occasion, I am privileged to receive messages from our shipmates/spouses.
With their permission, I would like to post their comments to our Decklog to share with you.
There is a picture at the website of the 1989 helo crash. I was the passenger on board. They were bringing me back from Worship services aboard other ships in our group. What a day! The crew responded magnificently as they always did during my tour. I truly love my time in the Wainwright.

This Decklog entry has been edited from two separate email exchanges;
My husband was Sean Ludwig OS2 while he was on the Wainwright.
They used to call him the Lude. He played softball while stationed in Charleston, SC.
Sean passed away 6 years ago in an auto accident. I wonder if you or anyone else remembers him. It would be wonderful to hear from any of them.
I'm sure our son, Sean JR, would love to hear stories from other shipmates about his Dad.
I work at Tricare at the Naval Hospital and see a lot of retirees but never recognize anyone who we used to know.
I always wonder if everyone moved away when the base closed down. Hopefully this will be a way to see if there is anyone who does remember him.

I was in that gang of young hoodlums in the CIC from late 1972 through early 1976. I missed our first Med port (1973)in the straits of Gibraltor because I was doing mess duty on behalf of the radar crew. My very first shore leave was Christmas time in Barcelona. What a great city! I still like to go back to Barcelona every now and then. I also made the Med cruise in 1975, and of course the detour to the black sea and Constanta, Romania. The only radarmen that I ever got in touch with were Larry Reetz and Bob Konitzer, but my pc crashed about a year ago and I lost the email addresses. Any radarmen, sorry, I mean Operations Specialists still out there from the 70's ? You can still just call me "Gutz"

Tom Mertz (Operations Specialist 87 to 89). Haven t checked in for some time. It is good to see the deck log back up and running. Have 4 kids now and I find myself frequently reminiscing about the Persian Gulf Cruise of 89. What a crew we had! Were it not for the professionalism instilled in us from the top down there would probably be a lot of blank spaces in the deck log. Thank you to all my shipmates who did their job, preserved our lives, defeated our enemies, and brought us home safe for a second chance at life.
A hardy thanks too to all you salty dogs who set the standard by running a tight ship long before I stepped onboard. You left us a heritage to be proud of and a foundation to stand firm upon.
During my Navy career I had the opportunity to see several other ships (only as a visitor), and I can tell you that every other ship I ever visited was pathetic in comparison to USS Wainwright CG 28. She sure was an exceptional girl. Any OI types out drop me a note.

I want to let you know that John's notation concerning the "poetry" that was once ahead of his post is no longer there. It is difficult to ignore all the meaningless posts that occur on a daily basis (usually about a dozen each day) but we are doing our best to keep OUR site clear of the endless automated messages.
As an additional reminder, the web site is going to grow with the aid of your stored away photographs, saved newsclippings, etc. Watch for changes to occur on the site in the near future as "the team" begins to gel.

Wow! Seeing some of the names in the decklog from when I served onboard the Wainwright is sure bringing back some memories. I was a SKSN, SK3 and SK2 during my 2.5 years there. I worked mostly in the Supply Office doing the financial side of the Storekeeper duties. Some of the names I recognize stuck the heads through the "window" of the supply office door. I am curious about Parker Webster. The name is very familiar and I think I know who you are, but would like some clarification.
I think that it is an interesting twist that I now work as a Storekeeper II at the University of Illinois. Some things never change.

Check out this photo, for anyone in the Gulf in 1988. I just found this yesterday. The label the ship as the Jouett, but it must be the Wainwright, as seen from the deck of the Samuel B. Roberts on April 16, 1988.
Fireman James Seward sleeps on the forecastle of the guided missile frigate SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG-58). Some of the crew are sleeping on the deck because of hull damage sustained when the ship struck a mine on April 14, 1988. The guided missile cruiser USS JOUETT (CG-29) is in the background.

Hey Rock - here's one that I know of:
Operation Praying Mantis is one of five American naval engagements cited by United States Naval Academy Prof. Craig L. Symonds in his book Decision at Sea (2005) as being decisive in establishing U.S. naval superiority. The others were the Battle of Lake Erie (1813), the Battle of Hampton Roads (1862), the Battle of Manila Bay (1898), and the Battle of Midway (1942).

To all who have served The mighty Wainwright Howdy. I have just read all the past entries of the decklog (98- through the last blast of spam just posted). I see many Names that I remember and some that I feel a brother hood with as you served a great lady and walked through the same hatch ways as I. Some before me and some after me. I was a crew member 75 to 79 or so as a member of R div. A few points I would like to address from previous deklog entries. The ht called toad during the 77 med cruise was Keith Tibbs If I rember he was from Lansing mich. The guys who would sing play guitar and mandolin were named Country and Tick(mike and stewart). The unfortunate soul who fell overboard hand cuffed after the Christmas party did not die ( he might have wished he did). We did have a crew member who was robbed and shot in a car on spruill ave. I don't rember if he survied, I think he was a bt or mm. And yes it is a fact that upon leaving the ship yards for sea trials we did run aground in the mouth of Charleston Harbor. The truth be known we were under the control of the Harbor Piolt at the time and burried the sonar dome into a sand bar. I know this as a fact as I was the HT who delivered the draft report to the bridge prior to getting under way. and yes we were originaly very rudely treated in turky. I was the boat engineer on the Captains Gig that was met at the dock by armed guards at the pier. Another 77 med pier incident was getting in trouble in Naples Italy for playing frisby and catch foot ball with the sailors from a Russian ship. The Brass did not find the humor in it. Does any one rember the ufo incidend in the med. I have a secret it was a kite with a strobe light used as a tail flown from the flight deck. well till next time. be good be safe and be proud.

Served on the Wainwright from 71-75. Started out a deckhand and moved into Nav with Chief Hall, Dallas Jackson, and a few of the others. Did both Med cruises, some GITMO time and up into Romania. Would love to hear from anyone who might remember me.

Just wanted to correct a previous post from Wayne Longa on June 7. The unfortunate soul who fell overboard from the quarterdeck while handcuffed after the 1978 Christmas party was an STG3 named Pete Conrad. He was having girlfriend problems, could not handle the alcohol and was escorted back by Shore Patrol after raising a ruckus. He did not survive the incident. The divers retrieved him from the Cooper River after 2 hours of searching. One of the STs accompanied him back to Minnesota for the funeral. It was a very cold and black day for 3rd Division.

Thanks Wayne for the post. "Toad" aka Keith Tibbs. We had some good times. I'll see if I can look him up. I remember the Christmas party when Pete Conrad drowned. Thanks Gary for that post. I remember he telling us the next day he was to go home on Christmas leave. I believe the QD watch jumped in and tried to save him, but he sank to fast. I don't recall the UFO incident. I reacll a EM had painted a peace sign on the side of the ship the night before we docked. Capt. was pissed! What ever happened to HT1 Long? Man that guy was ugly!

With the reunion in Memphis only a week away (some will be on the road as early as Sunday take time to dig into your closets, attics or wherever you store your Wainwright
memorabilia, dust it off and bring it along. I'll be glad to photograph each item to place in an album of long forgotten Wainwright artifacts.
See you in Memphis.
