Was on board '84-'86, PNSN, Just wanting to say hello to all former shipmates and it was nice to see that the Wainwright was the most decorated surface ship in the Atlantic Fleet. I remember that we did have our act together when I was on board. I remember taking some Haitians that had drowned back to Haiti almost as soon as I reported on board. I was not even assigned a bunk yet, and off we went. We got from port in Charleston to below Miami in record time I'm sure. I remember having to sleep on the floor with the Boiler Techs and the floor was very hot from the engines running full steam all through the night. We kept the dead bodies in the food lockers to keep them cool. I'm not complaining at all here, it was an experiance
and one that got me off on a good foot with the Boiler Tech's on board. Just wondering if anybody out there was on board then, remembers what I'm talking about and/or remembers me.

Hi all. Yes it's true. WW did run aground in the Cooper river. We were heading out for a 3 day "shake down" after installing some new equipment,I think. I was in the aft gyro/gun radar room on sea and anchor detail, listening(on sound powered phones)to the bridge and the guy manning the fathometer as he read off the slowly decreasing depth. The sonar dome, hanging 10' or more, below the keel got hung up first. One of the first things "we" did(it's not what I would've done :) ), was drop anchor. Why drop anchor? You're not going anywhere! The bridge attemted to pull her off but the tide was fairly low so all that happened was that a hole was punctured in the side by the anchor! We waited until high tide and for 6 Dept of the Army tugs to help pull us off. Back to the shipyard for repairs.

As I recall, there was a freighter that we were giving way too(although we were not required too) and ran aground.

Hope that helps!

IT'S ANOTHER MELANCHOLY DAY . . . THE PASSING OF GEORGE HARRISON.

IN MAY OF 1967 MIKE SWEENEY SHOWED UP IN THE 55B RADAR CONTROL ROOM
WITH THE NEW BEATTLE'S ALBUM. THE NEXT DAY WE SAILED OFF TO VIET NAM
DUTY. YOU WILL REMEMBER THEM FOR WEARING THOSE FUNNY UNIFORMS; IT'S SGT.
PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE SINGLE MOST
POPULAR ALBUM WITH MY KIDS, SOME OF WHOM NOW PLAY IN BANDS.

I FIND THAT GEORGE'S BIRTHDAY DAY/YEAR IS MIGHTY CLOSE TO MY OWN.
THE NEWS NOW REPORTS HIS WORDS "THAT LIFE IS SHORT." I NOW WONDER
WHERE THOSE YEARS HAVE GONE.

BEFORE MORE OF LIFE FADES AWAY I WISH TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO I
SAILED WITH FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR FINE REPUBLIC, FOR DOING YOUR
DUTY WELL, IN UNPOPULAR TIMES. YOU ARE THIS NATION'S PATRIOT SONS.

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE REUNION.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Department of Defense announced
Nov. 28 an alternative to the "Any Servicemember" and
"Operation Dear Abby" programs, which were suspended
indefinitely in the wake of anthrax mail attacks.
The Navy has developed a Web-based alternative to benefit
members of all services. The program can be reached at the
Navy LIFELines Services Network by visiting
http://www.LIFELines2000.org or
http://anyservicemember.navy.mil.
Those who want to send a message of support or holiday
greeting to military service members will find a simple
process for delivering messages at these sites. The "Any
Servicemember" program allows participants to select from one
or all branches of the military.
To receive a message of support, service members will log
onto the Web site and choose messages for their branch of
Service and home state. Those sending a message who wish to
receive a response may include a return e-mail address. Since
all messages are viewed on the Web, the military's regular e-
mail service is not affected.
"Operation Dear Abby" was founded by the newspaper advice
columnist and has delivered mail to service members overseas
during the holiday season for more than 17 years.
The "Any Servicemember" mail program began during
Operation Desert Storm in 1990, and continued to grow during
operations in Bosnia, starting in 1995.
Other alternatives for supporting deployed
servicemembers were announced in an Oct. 30 news release,
available at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Oct2001, by
selecting "Other Ways to Get Behind Troops."
For this and other DoD news, go to
http://www.defenselink.mil.

I'm another who checks the "Decklog" almost daily. The "Decklog" probably appears to most that it is a place to sign in to let the site owner know who is checking out the site. Nothing wrong with that. It sure is nice to see a name of another fellow "Wainwrighter", and see what is on their mind. I'm sure all of us are thinking the same thoughts at the present time. As the final visit to the Ship in Philadelphia is in preparation I wish to express a few thoughts on SOS.

First to the WORKING Party retrieving artifacts for our
memorial museum, GODSPEED for safety and success. Be careful and return home whole. Thank you for your efforts
to preserve our memories with tangible artifacts.
Second to all those who have supported SOS efforts with contribution, phone calls, letters and just being behind this project: THANK YOU, your support are not in vain. Even though the ultimate goal of saving Wainwright was not reached, this has been a successful project. We helped to unify this Association for Fellowship, Memorial and Reunion.
We became known to the Naval community as some who care
and are active in preserving the memories and honor of service. We were able to retrieve many artifacts in an unprecedented manner.
To Richard and all who have been "Hands ON" I extend a heartfelt THANK YOU and COMMENDATION from your shipmates.
We have learned a lot about the magnitude of this type of
project and how we can work together. We are WAINWRIGHT and
have many opportunities to continue in pride as we gather in the coming years for Reunion. God Bless all Wainwrightmen. Donald E Raby, Association Secretary

Manny Seligmann, where the hell are you? I just signed up for membership and the PayPal system says my $15 is payable to a "Manny Seligmann." I don't figure there can be more than one person with that name who is associated with the Wainwright.

By the way, I'm curently associated with the USS Midway (CV-41) Museum project here in San Diego. This projec has been through all sorts of hurdles, and is finally coming to fruition. Two projects on two different coasts is a little more than I can handle, but the Midway project shows that there's hope for the Wainwright. Good luck to all and to the project.

Hey all, I got a response to the letter I wrote in May from Admiral Clarks office. It was answered by Patricia Dolan and it was not a good letter. It was really too long to post on here, but if anyone wants to read it let me know. Warning though, it is very disheartening and sounds as if they've already written us off.

Hello Shipmates,

I am looking for a good photo of the Wainwright to use on the front page of the Ship's Newsletter. A scan, fax, or E-mail will not work. I will take the responsibility for the safe handling and return of the photo. If you have a good photo please let me know by E-mail and I will give you a mailing address.

Greetings,
I am a MK92 FCS tech on exchange duty with the RAN at Garden Island Sydney and thought you might be interested to know that the MK68 director from USS Wainwright is here in Australia. The RAN was using it as part of thier MK68 MOD19 school. The school has been decommissioned since last year and all the interior equipment dismantled but the director and the barrbet (from USS Goldsborough AN/SPG-60 director) is still in place. At present the RAN does not have plans to removed the director due to the cost of craining over top of a two story building to remove it.

Greetings to All. It has been a while since I have had an opportunity to communicate with my friends and shipmates of the Wainwright. My compliments to Ken Zalewski for his continued diligence with the Web site and to Richard Molck for his efforts to Save Our Ship (SOS). In the earlier days of the association (1993-1995) I had the opportunity to edit, format, process and mail the newsletter. I unfortunately had to give up the resposibility due to other committments and it is great to see that it has come back to a more frequent schedule. My compliments to Dick Becker and Cliff Davis for teaming up together to commit to this effort. Please support them in any way possible. Congratulations to all the new shipmates involved in the Leadership of the association along with the old salts who have kept things going for the 12 or 13 years it has been in existence. I have never felt part of something any greater than the USS Wainwright Veterans Association. I have been unable to provide much support to any efforts but my hope is that will change in the future. I look forward to the next reunion in 2002 and seeing all my old friend and to meet some new ones. God Bless to all and Fair Winds and Following Seas in all your efforts. joe autovino 6/27/2001 (Plankowner - USS Wainwright (DLG-28)

Siting here, at the computor, looking out the window at the sunshine and just reminiscing through the years thinking of all the people I have known from the Wainwright...I want to wish all of you a very safe and relaxing weekend.

Just as I do, I hope you all remember the names and faces of the ones we once were with. A day such as Memorial Day is not only for remembering the ones who have fallen in the line of duty, but also those who are still around doing whatever is needed of them, be it in the active service or helping out in their communities where they live.

Thank you all for the privilige and knowing and serving with you over the years.

Sincerely,

I sit in the Law Firm where I now work as a Senior Consultant,
in Tampa, Fl and behind me is a Retirement Shadow Box that
Bruce Bradway had made for me...I had actually transferred
from the Wainwright to COMCRUDESGRU Two - 2 years before
I retired...but my Fellow Chiefs on the WAINWRIGHT..took
care of my Shadow Box - Men of Honor and Integrity...I
served with from 1986 - 1987. On the wall in my office
is an electroplated picture of the Wainwright, part of the
Plaque I was given by the Chief's Mess "In Appreciation
from the Chief Petty Officers Mess of the USS WAINWRIGHT,
CG-28. The Names of 30 Fellow CPO's SCPO's and MCPO's
adorn it. Among those names is ETCS(SW) George Zinser,
among the finest Shipmates a Navy Man could ever have.
George left the Wainwright on his selection for LDO and
in 1995 was fallen by a sudden stroke while still on Active
Duty - His Death was sudden and unexpected. He was my
Friend - and I often think of him even now. Jack French
name also emblazons this plaque that hangs on my wall. Jack
was our Chief Master at Arms - A no nonsense Navy Man,
serious and dedicated, yet a Navy Man with a quick and
humorous story, who could make you laugh. I played many
a game of Pinnacle with Jack sitting at the table. Jack
French was a victim of Cancer in the late 80's...I am
proud to have known him, I can still smile to see his
name here in this place - and remember better days.
I hear from Warren Freeman now and again - he retired
not so long ago and lives in the Norfolk area - no finer
shipmate could a man have than Warren - he was my LPO
on the Wainwright til he Made RMC. When I transfered to
CCDG-2, Warren took over my job as the Communications
Chief. Bruce Bradway of course was our Command Master
Chief - he led our Chief's Mess on a directed and exacting
course - in support of a Great Navy Warship, in the finest
traditions of the Navy. In 1989 when I retired, he made
certain I was presented with this fine Plaque and Shadowbox
that now sit in my office, and within the Shadowbox - a Flag
that flew on the Mast of Wainwright has she slid through
the waters of The Atlantic, that we had crossed together.
His was the call I received in 1995 at George Zinser's
passing. Then there are all the other names on this
plaque - I sometimes wonder where they are today. Bobby
Jackson - oldest guy in our mess - retread - best card
player I ever saw...Johnny Freeman - Master Chief Machinest
Mate, a man who always walked tall. Virgil Thorstenson,
James Jenkins, Paul McCullough, Carlos Mallari - best SKCS
in the Navy, John Thompson, Mell Dixon, John Lopez, Mack Scott,
David Hall, Robert (Bobby) Bryan, Danny Blair, Douglas Brewer,
Bill Odom, Ronnie Dade, Ron Stout, Phillip Hunt, Bobby Orman,
Craig Weatherby, Bill Tillery, Glenn Swenson, Mike Lackemacher,
Lamont Blomberg, Gary Meritt and Warren Vondollen. I hope
whereever you guys are - life has treated you well.

Sonar Tech on the Wainwright from 87-89. I remember Operation Praying Mantis very well. On that day I was the phone talker topside on the starboard side midship 50 Cal. gun mount just aft of the chaff launchers. As all onboard at the time remember, that chaff probably saved our lives. I can still remember the erie sound of the Harpoon missle over head as it passed down the starboard side of the ship. I had my face buried in the nonskid. *** NOTICE ***
As of this date and time I am closing the discussion started by Shipbuster. This discussion has gone beyond the scope and intent of this decklog. As webmaster I have reserved the right, which I have very seldom exercised, to control posts to this decklog. To this date I have exercised this control only a few times, removing commercial posts that were made into the decklog. The only other time I have removed an entry was when requested by the poster. From this point forward however I will remove any new posts pertaining to Shipbusters comments that are below. I will NOT remove the posts that already exist on this. I take this action at this time as this is resulting in nothing more than a shouting match between Shipbuster and everyone else. If anyone cares to continue the discussion with shipbuster, please take it to email.

Shipmates: I thank all the shipmates for maintaining a civil tone during this. It is a shame that there are those that wish to contribute nothing more than discord. Those who have responded to Shipbuster have shown once again the pride and professionalism that marked the history of Wainwright to this day.

Shipbuster: You have many facts wrong. You obviously care not what they are but I will refute them one last time in the interest of clarity for all that read this decklog.

1) We have had discussions with Patriots Point. They were amenable to having Wainwright located there. We have however pursued other avenues also, Patriots Point is not the current front runner for location of the ship however
2) The current option has us putting Wainwright back at the old Navy base on pier “Q”.
3) The city of North Charleston is very eager to have Wainwright back at the base as part of a redevelopment plan that will be beneficial to both the association and the city.
4) Yes there are many existing ship museums around the country at this time, and yes some of them are experiencing financial and other hardships. But we are working to prevent these problems as we move down the path to saving our beloved ship.
5) We are not wearing rose colored glasses. We are acutely aware of the pitfalls that lie before us on this endeavor. But with proper planning, and careful execution of that plan we will be able to overcome these problems.
6) One of the things that makes this whole effort worthwhile is the ship itself. At this time there are NO cold war era warships being preserved as museum pieces. The only other ship of this era that has a chance to be saved right now is the USS Sterett on the west cost. All other Leahy/Belknap class ships are gone, or will be by the end of the year. The preservation of the Wainwright will provide in part a memorial to the U.S. Navy’s involvement in Viet Nam. A war which has been for the most part painfully ignored by this country.
7) Finally we work to preserve the ship to honor our shipmates who have already passed from this life. To honor their service to this country as well as our own. To honor the Ship itself that carried sailors for 31 years into, and safely out of harms way while defending the Constitution of this great country. And last but by no means least, to honor Commander Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright; Master Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright Jr.; Commander Richard Wainwright; Rear Admiral Richard Wainwright; and Commander Richard Wainwright.

You obviously care nothing more than to stir up anger and hatred. Frankly we have many more important things to do at this time. You state that you did indeed serve aboard Wainwright, I will accept that what you say is the truth. I can only guess, but it appears to me that your time aboard Wainwright was distasteful for you, I am saddened by that. But know this, you will always be welcomed as a shipmate by this association. We all have at one time or another had a bad time that we can recall. I do thank you for your opinion however, and look forward to your visiting the ship when she opens for tours.

Dear shipbuster: Your fears are expressed in you annomynity.
If no one wants Wainwright, then she will not be saved. Nothing I say or you say will change that. You can only speak for yourself as you have done, but unless you are representing Patriot's Point you do not speak for them. By the way, your assesment of them is off the mark.
We had an open public meeting in Dayton OH which you could attend and express your ideas, if you want to be part of the group. We exist for mutual Benefit of all Wainwright Sailors. Apparently your memories are otherwise, therefore not beneficial. If it help you to blow it off here and get over it then go ahead, but PLEASE limit your comments with

First off, before you all become insulting you need to review your own personal meaning and worth. If you don’t like what I say then suck it up, your insults prove only that you can’t stand criticism. If you would take off your rose colored glasses and take a look at the real world you would see the major potholes on your yellow brick road. What business do you think you have becoming possible hosts to the general public of a Naval Artifact if you can’t maintain a civilized conversation without degrading yourselves by name-calling? I guess this touch of reality struck a nerve didn’t it. You all can huddle around in your nursing homes, have your little meetings and waste everybody’s time or do something really positive. Listen you can’t have the WWT it’s going, going all but GONE. Take your little committee and do something positive, that’s what you talk about well do it. To start with solicit the correct offices to get a new ship named WWT, until then sponsor/support some active ships MWR program and stop wasting other peoples time.

I noticed you have registered with HNSA that was a positive move, now go on from there.

For all www.maritime.org/hnsa-guide.htm lists all vessels currently on display. Way to many, who pays for them all anyway? Well we do as tax payers when these organizations lose it all and fold then the Navy has to go back and retrieve the hulk and dispose of it properly. I’m not saying that they all will fail if there is enough public interest then yes they will succeed but the third ship in a class who cares, Where’s the lead ship the Belknap oh sorry she’s been sunk. Remember the Calbot? They had millions of dollars to save that WWII pos and where is it now, Brownsville TX getting recycled. To start with nobody wants the WWT not even Charleston’s Patriots Point. Old ships are not profitable nor do they attract the public as they once did. If you don’t have the park service or the Navy’s support you are doomed to fail. ***Please tip your rose colored glasses up at this time to see that pothole.

My interest in this that I made the mistake of mentioning I had served on this future target in my office, now I get ragged on over your futile efforts in finding somebody who G.A.F about the POS WWT.

P.S. Jesus was the head shipbuster! He didn’t need ships he could walk on water!!

It's good to know we've got people who are committed to doing their best on things like this all through our Association! Good results start with good people!

P.S. My phone number area code was changed. It's now 843-558-2154.

Take care, guys, and you, too, Ashley & Erica!

Heard about this clown "shipbuster" while at the exec committee meeting and just had a chance to read his comments. What a hoot. Responding to him isn't worth the time. Full steam ahead.

Note to shipbusters: I feel it's OK to believe what you will and if you want to believe something can't be done, that's OK too....just don't stand in the way of those who are doing it.

Hey guys. We had a really good X-comm meeting this past weekend. So much information was passed it makes yur head swim. We are entering really exciting times, largely due to the efforts of some real tigers on the Tiger team. Actually , Rich, Ken, and Jeff are more like Rhinos in a cow world (cows follow the herd, Rhinos blaze their own trail). People all over are behind us. PLEASE send in your dues/contributions. Be a part of something grand.

Boys & girls, don't bother getting all upset over this clown who calls himself "shipbuster"! Anytime you're doing something positive, rest assured that negatives like him will pop up, from time to time! When you feel miserable about yourself and your life, it's always easier to try to drag all the others down to your level, than it is to do the work to lift yourself up to where you should be! Jesus had trouble with "Shipbusters", too, but they were called Pharisees! We as an association are strong if we stick together and pull together in the same direction! Wasting time worrying about life's little annoyances is just that! Wasted time! Let's keep our eyes on the prize, and think on the good things of our group!
Take care, and God bless y'all!

MR. shipbuster@hotmail.com, Yes you maybe very right about the condition of the WWT, but it seems to me that even if you think She was/is a P.O.S., you must have some thing you remember that is postive about WWT, or you would not bother with our web page. You are only one of hundreds that served aboard Her and are surely entitled to you opinion as we all are.

Save your prayers for the S.O.S. that’s Sink our ship. If you are offended by reality then you had better pray for yourself, the truth is out there even if you don't like it. What you need to know about me is right in my email address. I'm not hiding its real.

And for all:>>> Patriots Point does not want the WWT, their question is "what part of NO don't they understand". They are fed up with the attempts to pawn off this pos on them , who wants to take on a 2-5 million dollar a year liability (that’s after the 10-15 required to relocate it).

Prior to being sold for scrap the pos was "demil’ed" that is every piece of equipment that could be re-used was removed. The remainder was torched, smashed or fried. Who do you think would fix that, Where are the parts don't look to the Navy these hulks are excess and not a dime will be put into them. This class already has had a several sunk , good riddance may the rest join.

This reminds me of that bunch of old farts that drug that pos LST325 back from Greece, now that its here who wants it? Bottom line somebody will be stuck dealing with it by no fault of their own.

If you want to do something positive then lobby to get a new vessel named WWT and let this nightmare about saving this pos go.

Gee maybe if you worked it right you could have them sink the wwt off of the coast of Florida as part of the artificial reef program and then you could dive down and visit it anytime you wanted to….

You all need to let this go... I served on the WWT from 80-83, she was a P.O.S. then and still is. There isn't enough money in the world to save this pile of junk, the word out now is since the scrapper defaulted and the navy reposed the hulk they can't resell them so they are scheduled to be used as targets. Can't wait to get the footage of this pos getting the crap blowed out of it. Lets get a pool going, 15 minutes after the first cruise hit it will crack open. Thats my block.

During a nostalgic search of the ol' "Lonely Bull", I was extremely happy to find that there was a website for the Wainwright. I served in E-Div from 84-89. A true learning experience that I will never forget. Particularly enjoyed the sections regarding "Praying Mantis". After seeing Glen Aleo, Bob Cowick and Pete Rousso's names and email addresses, I hope to eventually see other's that served onboard the warwagon during the mid & late '80s on the list. Sad to here about ETCS Zinser. I first stepped foot onboard with him in Haifa, Israel. If ETCS hadn't had his American Express card on hand when he, myself and 4 others would have starved to death and left homeless since the Navy forgot to give us any per diem after leaving Sicily, all of us broke and we arrived a week before the ship pulled into Haifa. Excellent hand and role model. Haze gray and underway, forever!

Good morning all...
just a reminder that the Executive Planning meeting is coming up on the weekend of March 23, 24 and 25 in Dayton, Ohio. I spoke with the point of contact this morning, they have 12 rooms that have been set aside for us at a special rate of $50.00 per night. The cutoff date for this rate is the 13th of March, after that the rate returns to normal. Also, if anyone is thinking about bringing a laptop for use, there are internet access ports in each room.

We look to have a very full and interesting array of items to discuss, any and all are invited to attend. This is an excellent time to meet new shipmates, greet your old ones, and have a chance to put in your ideas for keeping this group vital and growing.

For motel location and point of contact, please refer to Don Raby's excellent post concerning the meeting.

Best Wishes,

It's been 10 years since I last saw the Wainwright moored in Charleston, SC. I served aboard the Wainwright from 87-90 as a GMM3. Browsing through the site and seeing some of the old friends names brought back memories and some good laughs for the good times had. At this time, I am rummaging through some old pics I have, and some old letters as well. I also have a US flag from the ship that a friend of mine gave me (signalman) from the 88 Persian Gulf tour. It hangs proudly during Veterans Day and Memorial Day in honor of us and many others before and after. I will try to get any memorabilia set aside and get copies to send. Also if anyone knows the where abouts of Pat Reese,Dave "WildMan" or Dan Ricklefs please email me the Info at tihinton@bellsouth.net. Looking back, I can say I was proud to be apart of the Wainwright legacy and the history the ship has bestowed upon us as individuals and as a nation, helping shape the history around us. I will always look back with pride for the duties served on her.

I'm sure you'all are now aware of the survey crew that visited Wainwright in Philly on Feb. 2,2001. I'm still trying to gather my feelings. She is in good shape as far as the hull, and the interior above, and below the main deck. The weather decks, and main deck needs work, but nothing us Wainwright sailors can't handle. Our fair lady got all of us through many rough spots, and now it's time for all of us to muster on deck, and Save Our Ship. She's counting on us know. It's a big task, but just like any other task we, Wainwright Sailors have taken on, we can prevail. What really made me stand pround was an active duty sailor yelled over to us from the Mahan, which is outboard of Wainwright. He wanted to know what we were doing, so I explained our task. I also asked him if he thought if it would be worth it. He stood proudly, and said " Hell Yes" this buitiful ship should have never been put here. He was on the Richmond K. Turner which swapped cruiser duty with us in Charleston. He then added that Wainwright was the Worlds Finest Cruiser, and it was our duty to now save Her. He said he'd help, and bet that every sailor in the Navy would if they knew about it. I then choked back the tears, and handed him my card to contact me to help. Every other person in Philly had the same remarks. So the bottom line is I need everyone of you to visit our Ship's Store, Get current on dues, Pass the word about our effort, and contact me if you would like to help. As we left the base at Philly I looked back, and told Stan, It's unbelievable that as scared as She looks, She's still stands the proudest in the harbor. The Wainwright is an icon of the Free World, and the United States Navy, let's preserve that icon for generations to come.

I was stationed on WWT 90-93. I arrived three days before the last yard period (13 months at Metro Machine) and the last cruise. I had the Quarter Deck watch the night that the OOD went on the 1MC to say we were at war with Iraq. On the last cruise, WWT was the "eyes & ears" for the Fleet off the coast of Bosnia during the UN food drops to Bosnia and Croatia. Seeing the photos of the "Old Gal" at Philly brings back a lot of memories...I hope we are able to save Her! Fair winds & Following seas.....

I feel it important to correct a mistake I made in my deck log entry. I stated that when aboard the Wainwright from '75-'79 we were the first surface ship in 45 years to enter the Black Sea. I stand corrected on that point by Don Scott FTM1. The fact is we were the first to have a port call in Constanta, Romania in 49 years. Thanks Don, I feel better now!

Hi all. I served aboard Wainwright from early May/75 to Aug/79 as IC3 and IC2. Still remember the IC shops location, 2-29-2-A.:) Guess that will be in my brain forever. :) When I reported, she was still DLG-28. Was renamed CG-28 shortly after. I remember the International Naval Review in '76. I remember getting the job of installing a new NC-2 mod 1 plotter in CIC. Shipyard(shop 67?) was supposed to do it but for some reason decided not to. Took me a week but it worked!
I was aboard when we were the first US warship (surface:)) to enter the Black Sea in 45(?) years. Had liberty in Constanta, Romania.
Came out of the Chas.shipyard in mid '79 and went GITMO. They cut our REFTRA short and sent us through the Panama Canal to Nicaragua(sp?:))I remember manuvering around a sunken ship in the canal, I have pictures!
I only know the whereabouts of one other shipmate. EM1 William (aka Bill, Billy-boy, wild Bill) Ryan. He's in Gainsville, Fl.
A search for Wainwright a couple of years ago came back that she had been decommissioned in '92 and sold. Sure am glad that's not true. I almost gave up until I found this site. If she can't sail again, I believe she deserves a berth of honor at Patriots Point. I would think the city of Charleston would want that too. She was a well respected ship in our day as well.
Hope to hear from some of my old shipmates except the "deadly" one:):)Actually, we had an IC striker we called "the deadly shipmate" because he was!!

USS Wainwright in South Cakalaki... I'll never forget it. I was an EM from '84 to '87, the working hours were long and morale among the electricians was so-so, but it built character! I hooked up with Mark Stanczyk last summer but lost his Email address. Hey Bob Cowick, I remember you, I was in the Leads Dept in Detroit when you came there.
I remember the '84 and '86 Med cruises, we owned the Piano Bar in Naples! I'd love to hear from anyone that knew me. How 'bout another reunion? Charleston is a ghost town now.
Those bars lost alot of business.
