Merry Christmas to young and old Wainwrighters alike!
I like the new pic on the homepage! By the bow-wave,we must have
been coming back INTO port, rather than leaving! 27 knots up the Cooper
River is my style!
Seriously, though, I'd like to wish all who read this a wonderful
holiday season, and the best of good health and good fortune for the new
year. May God be with all us old salts, and keep His angels "round
about us" so that we may all meet again in 2002!
Blessing on ya, guys! Don Scott

In memory of those who gave it all for freedom and defense on Pearl
Harbor Day 2000 we are reminded of the fact that there is need for strong
defense readiness and this is underscored by recent attack on USS COLE. We
must remember that the world is full of threats from those who would
terrorize and enslave and for this cause we were willing to go whereever.
I am glad there is a USS Wainwright Veteran Association to help preserve
these memories. Let us voice our influence and prayers for out leaders to
reinforce our forces. DR

'Tis the day before Thanksgiving, and I'm sitting here musing over
the years that have passed since my days on the Wainwright. Wow, that's a
lot of years! (No wonder they call me Oldphart!)
What am I thankful for? For God keeping us safe through 3 Vietnam
cruises. For men like J.C. and Oz and Stan, and too many to name, who had
the vision necessary to create an organization like this one! For
Wainwright officers and crewmen who weren't even BORN when us old codgers
were floating in the Tonkin Gulf, and who carried on a tradition of
excellence that started with Capt. Foreman's commissioning crew, and never
slacked off! For good times and good friends at every reunion!
And most of all, even though some of our shipmates have passed on to
God's great reunion in Heaven, I'm thankful that so many of this great
crew are still here on earth to celebrate God's goodness to us this
Thanksgiving.
God be with you all, and bring you fair seas and following winds.

The Old Man and The Sailor
He was old and worn and a bit forlorn as he ambled through the park,
He spoke to me and I could see that his eyes had lost their spark.
His gait was slow and his voice was low as he asked to sit with me,
And I answered him with a friendly grin, The sitting here is free.
He gave a smile and we talked a while and his voice was rather weak,
But his mind was strong and it wasn't long until he began to speak
Of yesteryears and I saw the tears as the memories flooded through
For he spoke of times and other climes as old men often do.
He smiled at me and I could see as he glanced at my Navy blues
That he'd earned his keep on the briny deep and paid his share of
dues.
I asked if he would share with me some memoir's from his career,
He said he might if the price was right, and the price was a can of
beer!
I've shipped on subs and oily tubs, on battleships and cruisers,
Ten thousand mates and I can state not one of them was losers.
LSTs on foreign seas, from Tarawa to Leyte,
You name it, lad, I've been there, from Alaska down to Haiti.
Liberty ships of paper clips, balsa wood and glue,
I saw one break apart one time and lose her gallant crew.
Marine Corps I took ashore on Tarawa and Truk.
Oh what the Hell, for quite a spell, I've had my share of luck.
One thing more, he said, before I move along,
There ain't no air that's quite as fair as the pipe of the
boatswain's song.
And the place to be is on the sea riding a fair sea swell,
With mates like you in Navy blue who'll follow you straight through
Hell.
So here's to you and your Navy crew who take our ships to sea,
You've fought and died and never cried throughout our history.
You're heroes all and ten feet tall and your spirits never lag,
You're the nations best and you never rest in defense of our
country's flag!
He rose to leave and I believe that he seemed to move much faster,
His eyes agleam like a laser beam and his skin was alabaster,
He glowed at first then soon dispersed in a cloud of misty cotton,
A dream at most, perhaps a ghost, but not to be forgotten.
Remember the lost sailors of the USS COLE (DDG 67)

I recently requested that Captain Lockee provide a Deck Log entry
for Veteran's Day. He did so, and I am entering it in the Log for him, as
he sent it to me via e-mail. Captain, with your permission, here are your
gracious and eloquent words.
I'm honored to have the opportunity to say something to
Wainwrightmen for the observance of Veterans Day this year 2000. As
veterans of Naval service, I salute you for your courageous, and
outstanding service in many geographical areas of the world where a
projection of the United States diplomacy and military power was required
and was so efficiently served by the presence of Naval power and was
exhibited so many tireless times by USS Wainwright.
I applaud and commend each of my shipmates for your loyalty, your
high standards of military conduct and honor of remarkable service to a
grateful nation in defense of the freedoms we hold dear. You've been a
lighthouse for democracy that remains strong throughout a troubled world.
Your brotherhood in arms is second to none and one to be cherished for a
lifetime.
USS Wainwright had a long and distinguished tenure in the service of
our wonderful US Navy and our country. A testament to the dedication,
competence and quality of its officers and crew. Thank you for a job well
done!

Hello everyone....
Just a few lines to try and give you my feelings about the past
weekend's happenings. Here was a stark reminder, that although we as a
nation and as a world have made strides to ensure that all peoples and
beliefs can be equal, there are still places where this is not so.
Unfortunately, we as a nation, are looked upon with distrust and hatred
and are regarded as a target of opportunity.
This past weekend, as we were celebrating the 225th anniversary of
the U. S. Navy's founding, some of our brothers and sisters paid the
ultimate price for our beliefs. The attack on the USS Cole was unexpected
and deadly. Yet, as one survivor stated, there was no panic and efforts
were immediately started to limit and contain the damage. The training
that we and so many countless of others have gone through, again served
it's purpose. The pride and professionalism that we felt and showed at all
times, is still there in the fleet.
I would like to ask each and everyone of us to take a moment and say
a prayer for those who were injured and killed on the USS Cole. Along with
this prayer, when you see some of our compatriots, say hello...how are
you...and thank them for continuing to do the job that we once did.
Sincerely,
Frank

Secretarys REPORT on REUNION 2000
Well another USS Wainwright Veterans Reunion has come and gone. It
was great to see the home port of Charleston again, although sad that the
Navy has no presence there now.
We met July 6-10 at Holiday Inn in Mount Pleasant SC, neat Patriots
Point. The accommodations were grand and the service was well suited to
our changing needs. On Saturday night we had Hawaiian Lau Banquet with
Chicken and Ham and all the fancy fixins. With planning for 65 and 96
showing up the Hotel Staff adjusted superbly. (Please register in advance
to avoid last minute musical chairs!!). After dinner, speakers and raffle
the tables were pushed back and music turned up and some brave sailors cut
a rug with their ladies. Great fun for all.
The hospitality room proved to be a favorite place to visit and join
three decades of Wainwrightmen. The comments from the youngsters to the
old timers that I was not yet born or I was only 4 in 1970
were somewhat shocking to some of us. After all it wasnt that long
ago and what hair I have left is not all haze gray yet!! It was great to
view the displays of personal collection of artifacts about the ship. Also
a fine experience to see the cruise books of other crews.
I know of no one who was unhappy with the events of the Y2K
Wainwright Reunion. The only complaint was that there was not enough time
to enjoy more of the fellowship and see the sights of the historic area.
That is why it is time now to plan for the next reunion in 2 years.
Watch the website and newsletter for details. This was my first reunion
attended, but I have tried to come to earlier ones and plan not to miss
the next one in 2002. It was wonderful to meet Anne Bodman, grand daughter
of Richard Wainwright and Gr grand daughter of the Admiral. One reason for
the greatness of the ship is the historic heritage and it was good to see
the Wainwright house on Tradd and King Street where the Original
Wainwright family settled in America. We hope to have her and other
Wainwright descendants present in all our reunions.
We have some new officers and welcome them and thank the older ones
for their continued leadership. I am glad to be part of the group and
happy to serve as Secretary to relieve JC from this duty so he can work on
the History Projects. He has done an outstanding work in organizing and
keeping this association moving in the positive direction. We are asking
for your stories and comments to help preserve the memories of this great
ship and the men who served aboard.
If you cannot write them down then send a tape recording as you tell
them to friends and family. We will transcribe and your part will be
documented. Nothing is to trivial or no part was too small. We served as a
team and stood together to preserve the freedom that we are blessed.

To all Wainwright men--I have just returned home from the Charleston
Reunion and wish to thank you again for inviting our Wainwright family to
join you. It was an honor--and a lot of fun!--to be there and have the
chance to meet you in person. My hug quotient is filled through next
February. I'll be going to see my mother (Commissioning Sponsor) in two
weeks with all the souvenirs and stories that I can carry. Thnks again to
a great organization, and I hope to see you again next time. Sincerely,
Anne Bodman

I am a proud PlankOwner of Wainwright and had the honor to serve
with the finest crew whom I ever knew in my 25 years in the Navy.
Captain Robert Foreman was an inspiration to a freshly caught FTMC.
He taught me to never give up and that you could acheive near impossible
goals if you acted like a "Tiger" and never quit.
Though there was much competion within the various Divisions at
commissioning, no other ship ever had a better group than Wainwright. Of
course, 4th Division was the best.
Greetings to all. Fair winds and following seas.

Independence Day and the 2000 Wainwright Reunion is coming up in a
couple days. I think of Independence Day as a day to give Thanks. I think
we should rename the other day that we gather together to enjoy families
and eat to much. July 4th is my Thanksgiving Day. July 6th is the first
day of the 2000 reunion, Anyone who plans to come to the reunion and has
not officially registered, no fear, just call an officer of the
association, e-mail the association, or just show up and sign in at the
quarter deck. Anyone coming to the renuion via Charlotte, NC, please give
me a call and stop by the VFW 8499 Post and see the Waniwright picture
displayed with honor. Don,t forget to bring your Wainwright Stuff for
display in the Hall of Honor. Looking forward to seeing everyone next
week.

What a pleasant surprise to see a web site dedicated to my old
duty station. I did 2 years on the DLG-28 from January of 1969
to September of 1970, assigned to the Deck Division. Wainwright
had just returned from Viet Nam, and was taking on a new crew
for training. We went of to Guantanamo, Cuba for crew training
and back to Charleston for a yard period.
I have fond memories of the ship and crew, and am pleasantly
surprised to see this site to honor and remember both.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE: I just finished talking with our contact point
at the hotel in Charleston, and I have some firm prices for the luncheon
and dinner luau. These prices DO include the tax and gratuity, which is
normal for large parties.
The business luncheon is 11.09/person
The dinner luau is 21.00/person
Again, the prices quoted and listed here do include the tax and
gratuity. There will be a cash bar available both times, and these orders
will be handled on an individual basis.
One more time...PLEASE...let us know if you are planning to attend
one or both of these functions. Be sure to let us know how many in your
party will attend. As before, the ladies in your party are more than
welcome at the business luncheon. For those of you who are local, or those
who will be staying at another location, check in as soon as you can, or
e-mail JC or myself and let us know your intentions.

in the Navy!" It makes you wonder...if it was so damn good, why did
they get out? Well, I'm one of those sorry folks, and I have to say that
for all my fond memories, I left when I needed to leave and I have no
regrets about my time on the Wainwright or my decision to go home. It's
all good and I'm proud to have served on a fine ship with some of the
greatest guys I'll ever meet. Hope Y'all are doin' good and I miss all of

There will be a Saturday Night Dance, following the banquet.
bring your dancing shoes.

I saw on the memorial page that EMCS Al Youngk passed away.
I am very sad to see this. He was the Chief of E-Div. when
I was on Wainwright from 71-74. I'll always remember him as
a good leader and friend. He got us through some very difficult
times during the time I was on board.
Thanks for having a great site.
