Trying to find anyone who may know the whereabouts of an old Wainwright shipmate from the '65 - '68 era by the name of Terry Duffy (Terrance P. Duffy). Terry was an SM2 during the reign of QMCS Quigley, SM1 Jim Winninghame, SM2 John Ward, SM2 Cliff Jones (me), SM2 Jim Novak, SM2 Don Meeks, and SM3 Frank Gentis.

It was a great time in Norfolk for 8th Biennial USS Wainwright Reunion. The site was perfect from the Hotel to the tours and banquet. It was great to see old friends and shipmate John Gardner from the Round the World Cruise 1970-71. This was my third reunion to attend and they continue to excell in a worthy venture. I was glad to see Mike Williams, Bob McCray and Cheif MF Thompson from our cruise and all my Wainwright family met through this Association. It is something that all need to plan to attend for a future
grand experience. Next one in Memphis in 2006. Be There and
you will have no regrets.

I am hoping to catch up with Scott Graham, was a young officer at the time on board the Wainwright for sure in 1990 or 1991. I had the pleasure of visiting and touring the ship with Scott. He graduated from Norwich University in Vermont. Originally from Milford, MA and had the nickname of "The Turk".

WOW what a reunion! It was great to get to see everyone again. This year was the best yet. I had so much fun that I'm still recovering. The organized tours were outstanding, and Saturday evening's event was the best ever. The only problem I had was the time was to short, like always. Hope more of the 80's-90's crew can make the 2006 reunion in Memphis. I guarantee a good time will be had by all.

Congradulations Wainwrighters another great reunion, the bar has certainly been raised and the 2006 reunion in Memphis promises to be just as great or better. It is indeed a pleasure visiting with old and new shipmates, looking at all of the books and materials. Richards display of Wainwright artifacts is overwhelming
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to these excellant collections.
Take care

This was my first Wainwright reunion and I admit I was a little apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. When my wife and I walked into the hospitality room for the first time I didn't see a single face I recognized. When we checked in with Dan our fears started to melt away as we soon had a whole room of new friends. Even though we had never met, we all shared the common experience of serving on board the Wainwright. My wife and I are so happy that we decided to attend, and we are looking forward to 2006 in Memphis. Dan and Cara did an excellent job in organizing the events and it was a ball. Some of us will never learn how to do the shag and we may have to consider scheduling afternoon naps with all the other activities. If you didn't make it to the reunion this year, definately consider 2006. I would love to see some of the guys from the 1st Med Cruise in 72&72;. See you all soon and thanks again to everyone who made the 2004 reunion the success it was.

Wow, what a great reunion! As I stood in the hospitality room and looked over at a familiar face (not too diffrent after a "few" years) I found myself getting reacquainted with Barry Parks from E-division. It was great to see some faces from the 80's..Dan Kern, Richard Molck, and Bob Diserns. Going out was just like being on liberty without all the hard work beforehand! Kim..How many forks can you fit in a Carona bottle? It would be great to see a few more shipmates make it out for the 2006 reunion. You'll be very happy that you did.

Time for the 2004 Reunion has finally arrived. The Bowman Team have prepared an exciting event for this year. I personally want to thank Dan and his lovely wife for all their efforts. I want to remind everyone that our National Home Post (Home Port) VFW Post 9488 in Charlotte, NC wants to extend a warm welcome to all Wainwrighters and invite you'all to stop by and visit the Post and share sea stories with fellow comrades. The Wainwright is well respected at this Post and this Post will help and support our efforts to create a memorial traveling trailer for our two tons of artifacts recurrently stored at Rich Molck's warehouse in Rock Hill, SC.
Thanks to everyone who is planning on attending the reunion and all the support you give to the association.

I was also on the track team. All I can remember participating in was the high jump because I was eliminated at 6'2" height. I'm only 5'11". I know I was in other events but I can't remember which ones. It's too long ago. We were a little short on team members and had to participate in several events. The track meet was rigged for the Ethiopians to win anyway. It was a waste of time. I do remember the Russians trying to pump us for information about the capabilities of our radar, sonar, communications, fire control and missles. They didn't learn much that day. And what about those crazy uniforms they wore. That was a long cruise. We hit a lot of ports. In case anyone's curious, there are certificates you can get for crossing the "Equator", crossing the "International Dateline", cruising "Around The World", going through the "Panama Canal", and many more. If anyone is interested, they can see them at (http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq92-1.htm) and can get complete ship history and cruises up to 1979 at(http://www.history.navy.mil). John C. Carlson could take a look at this sight because he has our 1970-1971 Nam Cruise history missing several parts. And has nothing on Wainwright's first Med Cruise. It's all on this website.

Hi,

I was on board DLG-28 Wainwright in 1970 and 1971 for a WestPAC tour to Viet Nam. After the tour, Wainwright continued west around the world till we arrived back in Charleston SC. I was a radarman RD3.

While on the round the world tour the ship participated in Ethiopian Navy Days in Ethiopia. It was a mini-Olympics and I ran the 10,000 meter race. I remember riding on the bus to the beginning of the race and sitting next to a soviet sailor. The only communication we had was a photo of my daughter I had on a necklace around my neck. He smiled and pointed to the photo. We could not understand one another.

Another vivid memory during the around the world trip was a liberty call in Mozambique, Africa. One of my ship mates and I walked away from the port and away from the city to the outlying area of the city. After walking for over an hour we could see grass huts and we imagined Tarzan swinging through the trees. Shortly afterward, we saw a local resident who appeared to be wearing African tribal clothing walking at an angle toward us. We were excited about being able to attempt to communicate to a real native. The closer the person came to us it was obvious it was a woman and we could barely contain the excitement of being able to try to communicate to a Mozambique native. When the three of us were within a few feet the woman said "Hey sailor, wanna F**K? We were devastated since we had seen so many women in bars all over the world who said the same.

Was there anyone else on that tour to WestPac?

Due to the repeated misuse of our Decklog, I am resubmitting the latest information concerning our upcoming reunion.
At times, the unwanted "commercial" messages are left on for a period of time in an attempt to track the abusers.

If you intend to be a part of the 2004 Wainwright Reunion in Norfolk, we ask that you no longer mail your registration to our home after the 26th of June. The longest delay in mail delivery to us was seven days.
We do not want to take a chance that your mail will be sitting in our mailbox while we are away. Cara and I intend to be at the Hilton Norfolk Airport on the 10th of July to begin final preparations for the reunion.
Our first priority has been to secure firm numbers for all the events. The hotel will allow a very minimum amount of estimating mouths to feed and derrieres to seat. The same holds true for the tours. The association cannot absorb the cost of miscalculated reserved spots.
The final day of our room reservation block is June 28th. DO NOT delay making your reservation. You don't want to pay the regular room rate at this time of year.
We look forward to meeting all of you who have already sent in your registrations and we hope to hear from more of you before we leave for Norfolk in July.

Dan Bowman

As far as the Ship s Store, it is now closed for all orders until after the reunion. All the orders that I had have been shipped.

Thanks

Just three weeks remain before the 2004 Reunion.
If you have not made your hotel reservations yet, please do so as soon as possible.
Remember that each night we have 40 room registrations, the Hilton will grant us a free night's stay that we will be giving away as a prize on Saturday night.
Currently we stand at 30 rooms registered to shipmates/families on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of July. We could receive four free night's stay to award some lucky persons on Saturday night if we can add ten more room registrations during that time period.
The price of gas has decreased dramatically so don't let that hold you back from attending this weekend of fellowship and camaraderie.
See you in the New Norfolk!

(((((((((((( Special Note to DD 419 Crew ))))))))))))
If you were part of the Wainwright crew that took part in PQ 17 during June-July of 1942, your assistance is requested.
A British television production company is piecing together a documentary on the 60th anniversary, this November, of the sinking of the German Battleship Tirpitz.
I am not sure what questions need answering. There are numerous books, films and websites dedicated to the ill- fated convoy.
The Wainwright was in company with the USS Washington, the USS Wichita, and the USS Tuscaloosa as well as other allied ships.
If you would like to respond to this request, please contact me initially by using my email address. If you wish, I can call if you supply me with your telephone number.

It's me again! I remembered being onboard for hurricane Hugo and the ship being tossed to and fro. Walking on the bulkheads because we were taking some heavy rolls. It was a great time! Especially watching the waves crash all around us!
I have pictures of the Cobra helocopters that were shot down in the gulf, and even some of the SITREPS Capt. Chandler wrote home to the WOW (Wive's of the Wainwright). I'm not sure how to put them on the site, or if anyone is interested. If so, someone contact me and let me know how to do this, and I would be glad to send them!
Anyone from E-Division out there? Or any other snipes I worked with out there?
Hope to hear from you guys!

==================== 2004 Reunion Update ==================
This is a message to all of our shipmates who live in the Tidewater area.
If you intend to join us at the Hilton Norfolk Airport during any of our planned events for the 2004 Reunion, please send us the registration form that came in the Spring 2004 Newsletter or the downloadable form from this website. In fairness to the host hotel, the tour company and your shipmates all participants must be accounted for before the start of the reunion. The events are funded solely by those shipmates and spouses/guests who have properly registered with us.
Commonwealth of Virginia law forbids us from accepting money on site for any of the refreshments that will be available in the hospitality room during the course of the reunion.
Any shipmate is welcome to visit during our stay from July 12th until the 18th. If you are unable to stay for the entire reunion or join us for any of the planned events we encourage you to still come see what the association is about.
We have been working on this reunion for over a year and we are looking forward to enjoying some of the fruits of our labor by sharing in the camaraderie that the Wainwright Reunions are known for.
Please spread the word to any of our shipmates you know who may not be checking this website on a regular basis. Also ask them to register with the association if they have not done so already.
If you would like to know if your "buddy" is coming to the reunion, just send me a note via email along with your phone number if you wish and I will gladly return the call.
We look forward to seeing all of you in the "New" Norfolk this July.

It is time to get your registrations for the upcoming reunion sent in to us.
The host hotel and the tour company are waiting to hear firm numbers from us so they can begin to make final plans for our meals, tours, etc.
Once the numbers are in, provisions will be made for those who are registered.

First, I want to thank Wainwright friend and shipmate Stan Smith and his wife for their recent visit at my home in Florida, spending a joyful afternoon of stories, laughter, hugs and tears. That visit my friend gave me more time in life to spend with my new grandson, as after talking with you I had a change of heart. I went full steam ahead and had my AAA surgery. Cut from stem to stern, but alive and kicking for awhile longer.
I was assigned to the Wainwright before she was finished being built in Bath Maine. I was about the 8th drifty (S-bird) sailor right out of "BOOT CAMP" to check in at Pre-Com Training Newport,Rhode Island. It was around October 1965 when I checked in and only about 8 of us in this huge old wooden barracks. Week one, two fist fights, sleeping on watch, two XO's Mast, one Captains Mast and 7 days in the Marine Brig. Week three was much better after receiving speech lessons from the Marine Corps "Brig" Drill Sergeant. Trained till March 8th 1966 when the USS Wainwright DLG-28 Guided Missle Frigate was Commissioned. Too many stories to tell from then until I left her around January 1968. Best ship, Best Crew, Best Officers and the Best Captain I ever served under Capt. Gary Lockee. Our skipper when I transfered off the Wainwright.
Today is the first time I have been to this site and I can't explain how I feel. Just moments ago, finding out LT Sloan has died leaves me lingering deep inside those days and nights spent aboard her. I can hear her bulkheads rumble like thunder as the bow slams down hard into the belly of another giant hurricane swell of water. Remembering "CON" officer LT Sloan, holding on tight his gaze fixed tightly toward the bow, slowly turning his head toward me on the helm looking into my saucer sized eyes giving me that "were OK" grin and wink. All who knew him, knew not a better man....Thanks BM3 RKD USN

In late March I mailed over 60 dues renewal invoices and 100 postcards to previous members inviting them to re-join the association. As of yesterday's mail call, over 50 of you have responded. Thank you, thank you for your rapid response and support. I look forward to others sending in their dues so we can continue to publish newsletters, buy new products for the ship's store and have the necessary seed money for reunions. I hope to see many of you in Norfolk in July. If you have not registered with Dan Bowman yet, please do so as soon as you can. We need to provide guarantees to the tour operators prior to the reunion. Fair winds and following seas to all.

Hello Fellow Shipmates, I was an EWSN onboard CG-28 from Aug 1986 until late Jan 1989. I am very proud to have served on such a Great Ship as the Wainwright and I will miss the ship but continue to cherish the experience and Friendships. I was onboard the Wainwright when we went into BATTLE in the Persian Gulf during Operation Praying Mantis and the Memory I hold closest to my Heart was when in the Heat of Battle, when the Iranians had fired the missle at the Wainwright, 500 men on that ship performed as ONE!!! All the training and preparation that we went through paid off....NOT A SINGLE MAN COMPLAINED OR WAS OUT OF PLACE WHEN IT COUNTED!!! Thanks to All Who Served and Who continue to Serve this Great Country!!! GOD BLESS!!!

I was only attached TAD for repairs to the phones and plotters. It was around 1983-84 IC1 Reddick was the lead ICman. I have to say though, that two weeks was probably the best TAD I ever had. Great crew, and Great Ship. I really wished I could've gotten permanent orders. Godspeed all.

saw warrant fischman's request for info about me. Four years late, but there you are. 1st LT and Nav/Admin, 1985-1988 when I left to go back flying. Out of the Navy in the 92 drawdown, make my cigarette money as a full-time writer.
"If it flies it dies," was not my expression, it was another LT in the wardroom's, I just used it for the T-shirts. "Chandler's Hogs," was mine. Where is Capt. Chandler now? He was the best. Crushed my spirit when he didn't make flag.

Rock on, kids.

The reason i am writing this is to let our treasurer know that i sent my two year dues in. It was sent to you in Oct.of 03. Please check your records. I received a post card saying that i have not paid my dues in a couple of years.

I Remember Herm Sloan with a glimmer in his eye and concern for his shipmates. He loved the Navy and He loved USS Wainwright. Although I did not serve with him, I felt a strong kinship after we shared a room and a walking tour of Charleston in 2000. His sight was weakening, but his vision was clear as he led me through the memories held in that grand old towne. He came to Reunion. He planned to come to Norfolk and I expect he will be with us in spirit. A giant and a warrior and a great leader of young men.
God Bless, Lt D.V. Sloan a friend to all.

LT. Sloan was the spirit of Wainwright, "Battle Tested, Battle Proven" He started as a regular boot and worked his way to a commissioned officer rank. He was always set in the "Old Navy" ways. My family had the pleasure to meet and talk with him during the Washington Reunion. My family truly made him a apart of their lives, as I had during the period of times that I was under his command. Impressive, does not describe clearly his personality. Those of you who did not have the opportunity to meet this person missed an opportunity to meet an icon of American spirit. I can't begin to tell you the sea stories that were connected to his life. Those who did know him, just take a moment and remember your favorite "Herm" sea story and laugh, he would really like that. "May he set sail, and arrive safely in the sailor's last port of call" With a tear and heavy heart I must say I will miss him, but I will never forget him.

SOMEWHERE I WILL SEE HIM AGAIN, PERHAPS AT THE PIERHEAD ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE JORDAN. OR UP THE HILL AT FIDDLER'S GREEN. HE WAS THE CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THE WORD SHIPMATE.

Hello. I served onboard the ole girl from 11/88-4/92. Was a BT2 when I left her for instructor duty in Great Lakes. I'm interested in hearing from anyone that served on her during that time. Good job on the new website. Served onboard Wainwright as a PN2 with Jeff Pugh and Bobby Joe Hunter. Made PN1 and went to the Nicholas (FFG 47). Made PNC on recruiter support duty in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Anyone with info on FC2 Paul Brown, GMG3 Shifflet, or any of the TM's, GMG's, or GMM's from 1984-1985, please let me know. Charleston isn't the same since the Navy left. I don't even know if the Flying Dutchman is still open, or any of the other clubs we used to get stupid in. Of the 5 ships I was on while in the Navy, Wainwright was hands down the best ship, with the absolute best crew. I hope to make one of the reunions soon, it would be nice to see old shipmates. Anyone onboard from my era (1984-1985) feel free to e-mail me. I'd love to hear from you.

Ken - Good job on the new website.

Those photos of the WWT returning to port from the Persian Gulf really bring back some memories.

I remember later that evening when I saw a glimpse of myself on the bridge when Capt. Chandler was interviewed by the local newstation. They came aboard at that first bouy (2-Charlie ??), I think.

I remember standing there when the reporter was interviewing him. I don't remember what all he said, but I remember feeling really proud about the stuff he said. They didn't air anything of note though and I was disappointed.

Thanks for the kind words about the site. I have herd from several shipmates indicating that the new layout is very pleasing to them.

I am very happy to finally get the memorial page up. There are three men on there that I knew from my time aborad ship. They and everyone else on the list will be missed by us all.

I want to thank those of you that have already sent additional information for the memorial page, if you know of someone that has passed please send us an update.

I would also like to thank those that have sent the images that are currently posted in the photo album area. I apologies for the long delay in getting them posted. If anyone else has images they would wish to share on the photo album, please send them in!

Thanks for the updates on the website, the pictures were enjoyable. Went to the memorial page, and read through the names, remembering their faces. Very sobering for me, three of the first 4 CO's are gone, and I had the pleasure and honor of serving with all 4. There are many other names on that list as well, all good friends and shipmates.

For all their families and friends, treaure the memories and keep them close. I wish the departed fair winds and following seas.
