Places we will see

Churchill Downs: America’s most historic thoroughbred racetrack was established in 1874. The grandstand with its twin Edwardian spires is a National Historic Landmark. We will start the day at the track kitchen eating breakfast with the racing staff and watching the horses’ morning workout. See the horses in training, catch them during a bath and learn about life at the track. Churchill Downs is very protective of their horses as they do cost a few bucks! They do not want these expensive thoroughbreds agitated so we must adhere to every rule and regulation. The Memorial Service will follow at the chapel. We are finalizing some special things to happen here. Then, off to the Kentucky Derby Museum which captures the “pride, tradition, and excitement of the greatest two minutes in sports”. We will enjoy a hands-on computerized exhibit and a 360 degree multi-media show, have lunch and return to the hotel.

The Belle of Louisville: The Belle of Louisville is the oldest Mississippi River style steamboat still in operation in the United States. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. No other steamboat in American history has lasted as long, been to as many places, or traveled as many miles as the Belle of Louisville. We will cruise the Ohio River while we have a delicious southern style dinner and enjoy some great music and dancing.

Bourbon Distilleries: Get an up close and personal look at how bourbon is made with a visit to the Marker’s Mark Distillery. You are transported back to the origin of Maker’s Mark and will get a taste of their famous whiskey. You can hand dip a souvenir bottle and put your personal mark on it. Lunch is in the Toll Gate Café. After lunch, we proceed to the Bourbon Heritage Center at Heaven Hill Distillery There you can see the history of bourbon and of course have another tasting. Jim Beam is the next stop. It is under renovation so we will visit the gift shop, hear a little about the distillery and again get another tasting.
Now we head back to the hotel and hope everyone is happy and bourbon satisfied!

Louisville Bats Baseball Game: Wainwright Veterans will be celebrated and honored at the Louisville Bats Game on Friday night. The Bats are a farm team of the Cincinnati Reds. I hope each of you will plan to be there. We will have a picnic supper of chicken, ribs and all the trimmings. Then one of us will have a very special honor. Someone will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Won’t say who or how we will select that person. Just be there and see. We will be sitting in the upper club level and will have the use of the Jack Daniels Lounge. After the game, there will be a fireworks show weather permitting.

Ladies Tour: Saturday morning we will gather to have breakfast together. While the guys are having their General Meeting, the ladies will take a tour of Louisville’s historic district. We will meet some interesting people along the way and get to sample some famous bourbon candies. We’ll stop for some shopping and have lunch.

Banquet: We will come together to celebrate our reunion with good food and good company. Our dinner is buffet style with plenty of selections to meet everyone’s tastes. We will have chicken, beef, and fish entrees with the Chef’s choice for vegetables, salads, and desserts. It promises to be a great evening with special entertainment and our awards presentation. Photos are at 5:00pm. You will get your photo at that evening. Couple and any groups that you choose to put together for a picture will be available.

Please be aware that all tours and events require a minimum of participants. We must have a certain number to get transportation and a group rate.
All events are subject to cancellation if we do not reach these numbers. If you choose not to go on Friday’s Tour, you may follow the bus but will not be allowed access to the back lot at Churchill Downs. There is parking across the street and you will be escorted to the chapel by security.
